I've measured as much as 8 cm. ahead in two of my pregnancies and in my case, it's never meant a damn thing. Always resolved itself by the time I was full term. My first baby was 7 lb. 9 oz., so not huge, and I haven't had this one hasn't come out yet, but I'm pretty sure the size has nothing to do with how big I was measuring earlier. I didn't have high fluid levels or anything.

My friend consistently measured 4-5 weeks ahead (and she was charting so she was sure of her dates, too). She did not have GD--just a big baby!

@anandam: I think just a larger than average uterus?? Baby was born full term at 7lbs 9oz, so she didn't end up being that big. I think it's maybe just an inexact measurement. I saw an OB and a endocrinologist for the diabetes and he consistently measured me smaller than the OB by about an inch, so some of it could be technique.

For peace of mind, my doctor always let me know that measuring your belly was never a good indicator of how far along you were. Everyone is a different shape and size, and he only ever used an ultrasound to measure growth.

@Sapphiresun: Do you know if the diabetes made the baby bigger or the fluid more, or both? Curious of the mechanism behind the extra size. My pre-pregnancy weight was normal by the medical BMI charts so I don't think that's it.

I had gestational diabetes, and typically measured two weeks ahead (and I knew exactly when I conceived because I was charting/on a monitored cycle). But I'm also a fair bit overweight, and they said that can factor in if they can't quite feel the uterus as well through abdominal fat. Don't know if that's an issue for you...

I'm 15 weeks in my first pregnancy and my uterus is measuring about 18-20. My next check-up is Monday, but I was suspicious and had a midwife friend double check, and she confirmed the size discrepancy. I know absolutely my dating is correct.

So my question is - if you had a size-dates discrepancy this early in pregnancy, what did the reason turn out to be? Twins, fetal anomaly, fibroids, cancer? All the worst case scenarios are running through my brain! Help!
