@Pumpkin Pie: I didn't know until it was in my home! When I first saw that there wasn't a basin full of water, just that the clothes were wet, I thought it was broken! Haha.

@Pumpkin Pie: The top loaders they make now (at least the ones I looked at) use the same water as the HE front loaders. The one I linked to above doesn't even fill up, it senses how much clothing is in the drum (I guess weight?) and only dispenses that much water.

I didn't know there were issues with a front loader. We also just leave the door open and haven't had any issues. I thought top loaders used too much water?

I've had 2 different front-loaders and just leave the door open after a cycle, and haven't noticed any issues. We currently have LG and it works great.

We have the same Maytag as @SweetiePie. We bought it in May and I run about 1 load per day, often of really dirty stuff--we garden and play hard in dirt/sand/water. Even using the "environmentally friendly" HE detergent, it works well. I'm very happy with it and I really like the see-through lid.

Has anybody purchased an LG top loader? We've been looking into those and I've heard good things, but also read a lot of reviews that said the machine I was looking at often became unbalanced and wouldn't finish a load. Just wondering if anyone has experience with those.

I think I'm too short to ever use a top loader, lol.

I leave the door open for my front loader and haven't had any mold/mildew/smell issues the 3+ years I've had it.

I wish I have a delay option too!

@lamariniere: We actually have an old front loader that came with our house, and haven't had the smell issues a lot of people complain about, but I've heard so many negative things that it make me hesitant. Good call with the quick cycle though. I will look for that.
@looch: I've never heard of a delay feature, but I would use that all the time. Thanks!
@SweetiePie: Thanks, I'll look into the Maytag!

@MrsBrewer: They smell so good and are pretty strong. I personally like that but I know some people are sensitive to strong detergent smells. Your whole apartment or floor that the machine is on will fill with the smell for a day or two. And the first few loads of laundry will smell like it despite using your own detergent. But again, it smells great, in my opinion.

ETA: I think there's another brand called afresh? But I've never tried them.

Oh and a little off topic, but occasionally my dishwasher gets a yucky smell too. I get these Finish dishwasher cleaners that are awesome as well.

@MrsBrewer: Tide makes amazing Washing Machine Cleaner packs. They really work! But yeah, it continues to come back every few months. I just keep a bunch of them on hand.
http://m.target.com/p/tide-high-efficiency-washing-machine-cleaner-5-count/-/A-14230069?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&CPNG=PLA_Grocery%2BEssentials%2BShopping&adgroup=SC_Grocery&LID=700000001170770pgs&network=g&device=m&location=9004075&gclid=CKTY2Jn_480CFQxahgodl8sMvQ&gclsrc=aw.ds

@LemonJack: I just got this washing machine for our beach house rental when the old one broke. But we only had 3 weeks left on our lease (it was a full year lease) so I only used it for 2-3 weeks. But it was great for those couple of weeks! I loved it!
http://m.homedepot.com/p/Maytag-Bravos-4-3-cu-ft-High-Efficiency-Top-Load-Washer-in-White-MVWX655DW/205594089

Oh and ETA: I think I agree with top loaders being the way to go. Front loaders look nice and everything, but I've been using both for the last year (front loader at our main home and top loader at our 2nd) and I much preferred the top loader! The old one only broke because it was 20+ years old and it was the first and only issue had with that machine. But over the years I've had issues with every front loader we've had (three different ones in three different apartments).

So I don't have specific brands, but I will say that I bought a front loading machine 3 years ago, and I loved it at first, but after about a year, I absolutely hate it...... I switch the loads as soon as the cycle is over, and I leave the door open to dry, and still I have disgusting mold/mildew in it. I've ran the "tub clean" cycle on a regular basis.....still gross though. I will never buy one again!

I've had front-loaders for years and never had issues with them. There are two feature I would be sure to look for. One is a quick wash cycle, somewhere between 15-20 minutes. Our machine (Siemans, mid-range price) has a 15 minute cycle that I use all the time for things that aren't really dirty like jeans or dresses that just need to be freshened up. The other is being able to change rotation speed. Ours goes from no spin cycle to 1400 rmp. I've been able to machine wash delicate things like wool and cashmere because I use my 15 minute cycle and set the spin cycle to either no spinning (for cashmere), or a low speed like 400 rmp just to get the water out and then hang dry.

We're looking to purchase a new washer and dryer, but are overwhelmed with the options. I was talking to someone who does appliance repairs and he said he will never own a front loader, so I've mostly been looking at top loaders.

I'm looking for something mid-range, nothing super expensive. I don't need the Cadillac of machines. This will be in our basement, so out of sight and far enough away that noise isn't really an issue.

If you have suggestions, please post them here. Tell me what you like/don't like about your washer!
