@T.H.O.U.: Smithsonian museums and the zoo are free! Weekends at this time are likely to be pretty busy, so with limited time, I'd stick to strolling around on the National Mall. I love the Lincoln Memorial--people say you can see Robert E. Lee carved into Lincoln's head. The Arlington National Cemetery is near the Lincoln Memorial, too.

@Happygal: I only have half a day. I land today at 1pm. I wasn't thinking I would have time for a museum. But if there was one what would you pick? How much does it cost? From this thread it looks like the portrait gallery is popular?

I should have great weather so even walking around would be nice.

@T.H.O.U.: I don't know if it's the best (depends on time of day, etc.), but it's very easy. Uber is great up there, too. Will you get to go to any museums? I'm jealous!

@sweetooth: Great recommendations!!

I'll offer another vote for market/cafe Society Fair and Majestic Cafe for lunch.

Majestic is one of my favorites. I can't think of another place with the quality of service and food for the low price point they offer. Fabulous, fabulous.

@Happygal: I forgot to mention Brabo Tasting Room too - it is DEElicious! :)

Meeting up would be so fun - but I figured since it was a short trip for you two that I wouldn't impose. And especially now that I know it's your first anniversary! Keep me posted if you're ever in the area again though. I'm still planning on making a trip down to the Richmond area this year too. I'll be seeking out food recs from you! :)

One big suggestion I have is use the metro! It's very easy to use - they use colors to designate what line you are on. There is no eating or drinking on it, though (helps keep it clean!)

@Happygal: Great location shift :) That's my neighborhood! And what a fantastic gift - Restaurant Eve is a treat! I still have yet to dine there for dinner, but lunch was divine.

Here are some more suggestions:

- Saturday AM farmer's market at Market Square: It's just fun to walk around even if you don't buy anything! It goes until 12 - so if you make it to the area before lunch you might catch it!
- Alexandria Cupcake is delicious if you're still interested in cupcakes.
- Society Fair is also a fun stop. It's by the same owners as Restaurant Eve. Yummy sandwiches! It's a gourmet market and a restaurant. So you could also stop there on your way out to have some munchies for the road.
- All of King Street is fun to walk up and down - and just see what catches your eye for places to eat
- I agree with @Lozza about the Torpedo Art Factory, it's a fun place to explore and sometimes even see artists at work in their studios.
- Another good spot is Majestic Cafe
- There's always a few chain spots that are good if you want to pop in for a simple bite: Le Pain Quotidien, La Madeleine - both yummy breakfast spots in my opinion.
- There's a Paper Source and a yummy pizza place next door, Pizzeria Paradiso...mmmm!

Have a great time! Let me know if you have any more questions! :)

Also - Cheesetique that was mentioned is in Del Ray, not right down there in Old Town Alexandria. But it's not far away from there!

@Happygal: Oooh, I've been wanting to try Restaurant Eve!
The other restaurant in Alexandria I've been wanting to try is Vermilion, and they do brunch on weekends, so that could be an option.
Plus there are tons of spots around the waterfront area- you could easily just walk around and pick whatever looks good.
Also on the waterfront is the Torpedo Factory Art Center, which is kind of cool.
I also think Cheesetique is fun- it's a cheese shop that also has a cafe that does brunch, and while I've never had their brunch, I've done cheeses and other stuff there.

Hi gals! Our location has shifted slightly to Alexandria. We got a very generous gift certificate to Restaurant Eve, and we wanted to be able to eat like little piggies and easily roll back to our hotel.

So our plan now is to head to Alexandria on Saturday, have lunch and explore, then head back on Sunday afternoon. Any recommendations for lunch/breakfast spots and things to do in that area? Thanks! I'll be keeping your recommendations for D.C proper next time I make it that way.

I LOVE DC. We'd actually like to move there at some point, if possible... but for now we just visit whenever we can. Dupont Circle is a great area to stay in.

I love Old Ebbitt Grill -- I personally think the food is good, the atmosphere is awesome, and when I booked a reservation one year for my husband's bday they surprised us and had the manager take us up on the roof to see the amazing view. So they have my loyalty every time we're in town.

Founding Farmers is great. Tono Sushi is not expensive and super tasty. Oyamel is pricey but excellent. We love to eat, by the way :)

And I don't think you can go wrong with the Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonians. I've always wanted to go to the Holocaust Museum but haven't yet. The tours of Capitol Hill are cool too.

Lots of great suggestions here! I'll add a few more for your consideration :)
- Portrait Gallery atrium - definitely worth the visit
- Teaism is a nice place to grab a light bite close to the Portrait Gallery
- I love the Hirshhorn Museum - and the walk is reasonable from the Portrait Gallery
- ALSO close to the Portrait Gallery and worth seeing is the National Building Museum. They have a great tour that is worth the time. But it's also an amazing building to see and the gift shop is one of the best!
- As for cupcakes - Georgetown Cupcake is tasty when the line is short :)
- Can you tell that I think you should keep the Portrait Gallery on your list of things to do? :) Have fun! And definitely look into the local event calendar to make sure you don't plan your visit around a crazy time. Unless you like the crazy :)

There are tons of places to get falafel in DC, but I'm not sure about the best, or even "great"- lots of people like Amsterdam Falafel in Adams Morgan, which is walking distance to Dupont, albeit kind of a long walk.
DC is also known for having great Ethiopian (there are several options around U Street, and a good place on the H street corridor), and there's good Salvadorean food too, though my favorites are in kind of random and inconvenient spots so I'm not a good person to ask about that).
Ben's Chili Bowl is iconic (for, um, chili. and such.)
And the Mitsitam Cafe at the National Museum of the American Indian is generally regarded as being the best of the inside-a-museum cafe options.
If embassies sound fun to you, even if you don't come for the open houses, many of them also host events or concerts or film series or wine tastings; if there's a particular country you have an interest in, check out their embassy page (or related organizations, like the Alliance Francaise) to see what they have going on.

I stayed in Dupont Circle in May of last year and really loved it. It was a great area to walk around and close to pretty much everything. The best rec I got was to eat at Citronelle in Georgetown but to eat in the bar b.c their restaurant is set up as a multi-course fixed price menu.... it was amazing. I wish I could eat there every day. They had great gin and tonics, I think they actually made their tonic in house? Crazy awesome. :)
