I wasted over 100oz of breastmilk trying to get LO to take a bottle before I went back to work. I finally had a serious DUH moment and switched to those tiny (3oz?) storage bottles and only put an ounce in them. She never took the ounce but at least I wasted much less milk than when I was optimistically giving her full bottles.

@shopaholic: yeah i'd toss it, unfortunately. the only way i got my LO to drink from a bottle was to go back to work. i tried so hard to get her to drink from a bottle while i was on maternity leave, and i wish i hadn't wasted my time. she was so stubborn!

@Smurfette: I know I should try to get her more used to the bottle, but it just actually seems like more work for us to clean the bottle and parts, especially when she doesn't take it. lol. And I only NEED her to take a bottle once in a blue moon. I guess I'm just being lazy too. But I DO have to start using some of my stash before it goes bad.

I got so sick of wasting BM when trying to get her to take a bottle, we used formula. It broke my heart to pour it out.

I also heard that when she won't take a bottle, wait 15 to 20 mins before you nurse. I would start trying every night to give her a bottle so she can get more use to it.

@septemberlove: @anbanan15: I think this is what I'm going to start doing from now on. Just 1 oz. to test her. I do have to keep pumping because I've been noticing as she sleeps longer stretches, my supply has been decreasing, and then she wants to eat more. So actually making sure I pump once in the morning before she wakes up has been helping.

Could you only put 1 oz in the bottle at a time? Just warm a little as needed and then keep the rest in a cooler? That way you could freeze the leftovers when you got home and not toss it all.

@shopaholic: Honestly, if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't pump. Could you pump it and put it in a cooler with ice packs to transport to the party? If someone wants to feed her, you could warm it then. Maybe just warm 1oz and if she takes it, warm more? I pump at work and put my milk in a cooler with ice packs and then refrigerate when I get home. If I have excess, I freeze it. So if you pump 4oz, wind up throwing out an ounce, you could freeze the remainder and maybe down the road you'll use it, like to give her sippy cups of breastmilk.

I was willing to save BM until the next feeding. From what I've read there are anitibodies that can actually slow bacteria growth so it's not like leaving a glass of dairy on the counter. Also my daughter was a healthy weight and age so I wasn't worried about her getting sick.

@TurtleDoves: @SleepyMonkey: Yes. So you would always toss it if they didn't drink it after 4 hours? This is my dilemma. It's just a hard decision now, whether to even TRY and give her a bottle anymore.

I would try to save it for the next feeding in the same day but after that I would toss it. Sounds like there wouldn't be a next feeding in that same day though? I threw away a lot of milk when my baby was rejecting bottles. It became less painful after awhile to throw it away.

I honestly never tossed if he drank a bit (touched his lips) but didn't finish. I kept it the 4h. I would never freeze it though, obviously.

Ladies, I'm so torn on what to do about trying to give K bottles of pumped milk. Since 2 months (we had a bout of Thrush), she basically refuses to drink from the bottle if I'm nearby. She will push it out with her tongue, or let milk just dribble out the side of her mouth. I'm still not sure if she's really drinking the milk when I'm not there since she always ends up with an outfit change when I get back home (making me think, she let at least half the milk drip out her mouth.)

Since I'm a SAHM and EBF, this isn't usually a problem for me. But on occasion when we go to a party or social event, I'll pump milk and bring it just-in-case. No exaggeration, but I end up having to toss almost every bottle I bring out. Such the case yesterday, I pumped 4 oz. fresh to bring. DH tried to feed her at the other end of the party. Less than a minute later, DH brings her back to me, soaking wet and still hungry. So I nurse.

Now, KellyMom and other sources say this milk is no longer good after 4 hours right? It's touched her lips. And that's it. So I should toss? It's starting to get heartbreaking to pump and toss almost every time. But parents are always telling me to just bring a bottle of milk and they'll feed her.

What to do? Do you really follow the breastmilk guidelines? Is this milk a total waste?
