@prettylizy: Do you insert the straw into the water then blow or just insert the straw into the cup but not touching the liquid?

We use a straw cup because LO doesn't like to tilt the sippy cup back to drink it. We don't have the Zoli, but I did something similar to @prettylizy: and LO caught on the next day. She loves that straw cup because I think she feels more independent. She drinks between 1-2oz. of water.

LO is 9 months today, we don't plan on switching her milk to a cup until after she is a year.

@sooz: ok, it's going to sound bizzare, but I I filled the cup, screwed onto the lid then I blew into the straw. The water pressure caused the straw to fill up and the second she got it in her mouth and bit it (because all she wanted to do was chew on the straw) water would come out. After doing that a few times she totally caught on.

@prettylizy: how did you get her to suck on the Zoli straw cup? we just bought one and he doesn't seem to get the idea that you have to suck on the straw.

I think you can offer milk/water in whatever you want. My grandmother always said skip the bottles/baby cups and weaned my dad and uncle onto shot glasses!! lol!!!

I think if you want to use a cup for milk, go for it. If it doesn't work for you, don't stress about it too much. We use a Zoli straw cup for water as of 6 months, and just recently we started giving her some almond milk with her dinner in the straw cup. I've been thinking about trying her on an open cup soon too.

I think people say ditch the bottles around a year? We always talked to our pediatrician about these things when we went there.

Our LO is 8.5 months old and since he was about 6 months we've been giving him a sippy cup with water after his dinner. More as a means of getting used to a sippy or something other than a bottle than actually getting him to drink a lot of water. At the most, he'll drink 1 oz, but typically it's more like a half ounce. He usually just plays around with his cup. We still give his milk to him in bottles.

There seems to be such conflicting info on when to transition to a sippy and if a baby needs to drink water. I'm assuming if he was thirsty he'd drink the water, so I haven't been too concerned with his water intake. But, when do we start ditching the bottles and moving to a sippy? Do you need to move to a sippy? Should I be more concerned because he isn't drinking water?
