I ended up putting down a large cheap plastic shower curtain (same thing I do for playdough). I pulled up the corners and shook it outside after. That worked well but just keep an eye on the little ones as the surface is a bit slippery if they are only wearing socks.

Um, we've never played with water beads, but now I'm thinking we can wait till we can play with them outside on a tarp!

We've never played with these, so I'm not totally familiar, but would it work to play on a big tarp or blanket so that you can just fold that up and dump them out at the end?

After one experience like yours, I only allow them to be used in the shower - not even the tub. The difference is the drain catch...I don’t want them going down the tub drain, but our showers have mesh over the drains so the beads can’t get through. If you do the tub, I’d suggest keeping the drain closed - I can’t imagine they’d be good for the plumbing!

What if you only allowed them to be used in the bathtub? I don't know what kind of bin you're currently using, but I might do a bin inside a bin type thing.

What do people do to clean up water beads? They are bouncy little suckers and end up out of the bin every time we play with them. Then you can't really get a good handle on the slippery little things to pick them up and throw them out. I'm debating letting them dehydrate and then vacuuming them up but I'm afraid my dogs might eat them.
