I just used water. She was still nursing just as frequently so there was no reason she needed additional breastmilk mixed into her solids.

@Smurfette: We introduced yogurt at 9 months. Would have done it earlier if she didn't have a history of dairy issues.

We just mixed the oatmeal with unsweetened apple sauce. Throw in a dash of cinnamon and heat in the microwave for 30 seconds and E gobbles it right up. I was barely pumping enough to cover his bottles and he didn't get any formula, so I didn't want to start him on some just to mix it in his cereal.

@Smurfette: We introduced yogurt at around 7 months

I just put oatmeal straight into the fruits and veggies. It makes it thicker which makes it easier to use with a spoon. If it gets too thick, they could use a little water...

Are you also introducing cows milk yogurt? I started using whole milk at around 8 months for the cereal, once i felt comfortable that he was okay with whole milk yogurt.

I would also do fruit puree--we either did the cubes that I had made or just some fruit from a pouch! Just straight from the pouch mixed with the dry oatmeal.

@Smurfette: I have been making the oatmeal with breastmilk and then swirling the two together (fruit/veggie puree + rehydrated oatmeal) But it sounds like I can just put the dried oatmeal right in the puree. That sounds easier. :)

i do partial water and partial BM. i'm not gonna go through my stash just for it though, so if i am feeling a pinch, i would just do water!

We would just mix it with fruit puree, like @MamaJ:! Oatmeal and applesauce, oatmeal and pear - it's really yummy. I'm sure water is fine too at 7 months, especially since your LO is (I assume) drinking water on its own too. I never used breastmilk for the oatmeal unless I had some extra sitting in the fridge.

A lot of the parents I have worked with do fruit puree and a bit of water if needed to thin it out. Another option if you steam any fruits or veggies is to use the water from that since it tends to have a bit of flavor and still has some nutritional value.

@travellingbee: I was wondering this too. Her teacher said to just use water. I was going to have them start giving her breakfast, and just do oatmeal.
Side not, how to you mix the fruit with it?

I started just using water around that age. Though I have no idea if I should or shouldn't have done that... I got tired of pumping just for oatmeal! Sometimes I would mix a fruit purée in there and it would give me a good consistency.

So LO (almost 7 months) is eating LOTS of solids lately and he particularly loves oatmeal mixed with his fruits and veggies. However, I am having trouble keeping up with pumping the extra ounces of breastmilk needed to send in to school to mix with the oatmeal. Sooooo... my question is, should I start breaking into my freezer stash (really don't want to!), mix it with water, or buy some formula to mix in with the oatmeal? His school said they could just mix it with water, but I would think formula would be more nutritious than water, right?
