We just bought a house with a pool (not my first choice, but oh well) and we're debating what to do.

I really want LO to take one of those rescue courses, but the time committment (every day for a set period of time) is going to be a challenge.

I would get something like this, that goes around their middle - http://www.target.com/p/stearns-puddle-jumper-life-jacket-girls-whale/-/A-14358972#prodSlot=medium_1_1&term=puddle+jumper. Life jackets can tend to ride up.

Same as @mediagirl, she will only be 8-11 months old this summer. So she won't be doing any swimming outside of our arms! Not sure about next year.

We have a pool, as do my parents, and my aunt. So she'll be in the water often.

This year (1 yo) she will be in our arms or in a baby float. Next year, she will be in a full vest thing. I can't wait until we can start summer swim lessons!

LO is 20 months. She's in swim lessons now, and we'll probably get her a life jacket.

We are doing a water safety training course with an instructor that will teach DS that if he falls in the water he is to remain calm, turn over on his back, move his arms and legs to get him to the side and to cry or scream to get attention. A local person we are using is Glendy from Glendy's Water Babies. http://glendyswaterbabies.com/

When in the water before true swim lessons we'll probably play it by ear and see what is needed/necessary.

DD got arm floaties this year, and that seems to be enough for her now. Last year (2 years) she wore a swimsuit with a built-in life vest.

I've been thinking about the same thing.
I grew up going to my parents' beach house every summer and have known how to swim as long as I can remember. I want the same for DS but am so scared as a parent. I want to make sure that he is safe.
I think I'm going to buy a life jacket for when we're at the beach or pool.

This summer, what is everyone planning to use for toddler safety around water? I can't remember what my mom used to do with us because we learned to swim pretty early on (age 2-3).

LO will be just shy of 2 years old, so I dont' know if we should do a full life jacket, water wings (fabric or plastic), or something else?
