We live on a lake & while LO is only 1mo, we'll be getting her a life jacket & swim lessons asap. For now we'll just forego boating.

I like the puddle jumper for groups with pools because even though I'm with DD, it provides a level of protection. Not that she's out there swimming on her own while I'm inside but so I'm not having to jump in the pool after her! When we're in the pool playing, I don't bother with it. On the boat, she wears a lifevest fitted to her. She first went on the speed boat on the lake at 1.5. I didn't grow up around boats so I'm a little more nervous but DH did and he's confident and safe and so is his family. I grimace when I see kiddos on boats without a lifevest.

I'm torn on the puddle jumper. I'm theoretically against it because it does provide a false sense of security. I did buy one yesterday though. When LO "swims" with friends that have them she gets very frustrated that she can't do what they can do. So I think we're going to use the puddle jumper sparingly, if at all.

I did not grow up on the water or boating. For that reason I feel like I'm more safety conscious than people who are more comfortable with boats (based on an incredibly small sample size). I would always have LOs in a life vest on a boat. In the pool or at the beach, so far we have not. I think once she is more comfortable in the pool a puddle jumper flotation thing would be nice so she can feel a little more independent paddling around, but it in no way would replace me being right there. Just enable her to paddle without me holding her up. She will also have real swim lessons when she is old enough to actually learn to swim.

At the beach we don't use any floatation but she is absolutely not allowed in the water without me being right there. She's more interested in the sand anyway.

@Truth Bombs: Interesting about you being anti flotation devices.... we are going to Hawaii in November and I just assumed everyone has kids in them for added safety. I agree- until she can swim well I will be extremely close. Since I grew up with a pool my parents were diligent with safety for guests I just can't remember what it was like before I could swim. @Greentea: Yeah I take boating very seriously. We usually only go out weeknights since it seems it's amateur hour on the weekends.

I would always want LO in a life vest on a boat... But probably wouldn't feel comfortable having her on a boat until at least a year?

I'm really against any sort of flotation device in the pool/ocean, etc. Floatations devices give kids and parents a false sense of security about the water. Kids should always be very heavily supervised around bodies of water so they can't fall in, and when you are in the water with your child you should always have a hand on them.

Yes! I am pro real life jacket! We hold her. A car seat seems !!! like a terrible idea.

I take water safety seriously. We live surrounded by lakes (on a chain of lakes) and I grew up on the water in every kind of boat. People die here several times a year :(

The summer has got me thinking about water safety....

When your child is around water do you always have them in a life vest? Pool? Ocean? Boating?

At my parents pool we just hold her- we will get her into a life vest when she can be a little more independent in the water. But in all other situations I think the life vest is the way to go. I have one for boating but may get a more trim one for travel. Any favorites?

We sold our boat this spring and are going to look at a new one Sunday. For those of you who are into boating how do your keep your baby safe? At what age did they first go on a boat? I got her a life jacket, she is 4 months, and has great head control. I have seen people put babies in car seats (!) in boats which seems really unsafe.
