@mslipgloss wow so weird. before i knew i was pregnant i kept thinking to myself, "how the h- am i gaining all this weight?!" by the time i found out i was PG at 10 weeks, I had probably gained 8-10 lbs. By 7 months, I couldn't wear anything except for flip flops. Now, flip flops are almost out of the question too!

@Zippylef @LYDG: I literally gained 10 pounds overnight after I got my BFP, and I have been *swollen* since the first trimester . . . although it didn't start reaching EPIC proportions until about 25 weeks. My BP has been pretty good too, definitely still in the normal range (although it is a little high for me).

@zippylef omg. 10 1/2 lbs? ahhhhhh!! how many weeks were you when you went into labor?

i started swelling about the same time as you...maybe closer to 28 weeks. i actually haven't had high blood pressure at all, in the 90/55 range, but at my last appointment it was 116/70, which is higher than normal for me.

@lydg: Haha, well 10 1/2 lbs of it was my daughter all by herself. I would assume about 20 of it was her, my waters and my placenta. I was in the hospital for 5 days, so I had plenty of time to lose some of the water. I did have a medicated birth but my swelling was all there before labor. I started swelling at 24 weeks and never stopped. I didnt have pre-e or anything... I just got really swollen.

@mslipgloss let's keep our fingers crossed for US! Ha! I can't wait for it to be over! I don't even recognize myself anymore. I have no swelling in my face, only my hands and feet! I haven't been able to wear my wedding ring in months.

@zippylef WOW...I am curious, did you have a medicated birth? I have heard that can make the swelling even worse, which I can't imagine at this point in my life. 2/3 of the weight gone before you left is great!

A LOT of mine was water weight. I gained close to 60lbs and I was down about 40 of it before even leaving the hospital.

@LYDG @RachieCakes: Yep - I can press my fingers into my shins and it will take *minutes8--literally!-- for the depressions to disappear. My legs acutally gain size as the day progresses from the fluid settling in my legs.

@LYDG: My legs look like yours (only the tops of my feet balloon up as well . . . it literally looks like my feet are going to pop). All I can say is I am totally with you re weight gain and struggling with numbers (I hit 38 weeks today, and I have gained 40 pounds). I see a group of OBs and have been told by every one of them that my legs make it seem like I am retaining a ton of fluid, and although they don't know how much for sure, they have assured me that not all of the weight gain is real weight. ((Hugs!))

@rachiecakes that is exactly how I feel! I will probably hit the 50 pound mark before I deliver. I don't think I can go on much longer! My dr. has been really aware of the swelling, and even though my next appointment isn't until Tuesday, I might give their office a call tomorrow. I will get indentions in my legs and they will stay a while! I can't believe I used to have muscular legs. :-(

(also - keep an eye on the swelling, if it's sudden or really bad it could be preeclampsia, it was for me)

I remember that I couldn't sit back on my knees either and could press dimples into my shins and top of my feet and they'd stay for a few minutes - the swelling was extreme!
I gained about 50lbs and lost 30 within two and a half weeks following the birth.

I just read that as much as 25% of weight gain in someone who is pregnant with edema can be water weight, not sure if that is encouraging or discouraging! That would be for me as much as some have put on their whole pregnancy!

i'm not too sure, but i imagine if you look at your feet and hands and they've swelled, then you are probably retaining water. my theory is that your fingers and toes don't gain weight when you gain weight normally, so if you see your fingers looking swollen then maybe its an indication that you are retaining water? but just a guess. i'm curious too!

I've gotten kind of down because I feel like I have put on way more weight than most during my pregnancy...I am ALL belly, but my legs have gotten gigantic. At almost 39 weeks, I am at *drumroll* at least 40 pounds over my pre-preg weight!

I know some gain MORE, but it's hard to see that number on the scale. I have had a ton of swelling and someone comforting me today said it did look like I had a lot of water weight.

Could you tell if you were really gaining weight or it was just "water weight?" How can you tell? My legs are so big now I can't even sit back on my knees because it hurts!!
