Thanks all! Using some towels over some of our current interlocking mat tiles may be the way to go. The tiles are old anyway so I don’t have to panic if I do have to toss them and replace, and hopefullly the towels would help with some of the mess and slipperiness.

I use cheap interlocking foam puzzle mats under our kiddie pool and slide. We keep them there all throughout the summer, occasionally hosing them down, put away after summer and I've used the same set for at least 2 summers now. They don't look amazing but also not that grimey that I need to replace.

I would probably try laying out a couple of thick yoga mats.

This is an interesting question - I feel like most playmats would get slippery though, wouldn't they? I almost think just a few super cheap beach or bath towels might work well to prevent skinned knees from the pavement - but they wouldn't protect from bumps & bruises the way a mat would. Once the towels are wet, they shouldn't slip around or rumple up, and they can go in the wash/dryer if they get gross.

Personally, my new walker just uses the baby pool on our patio - it really hasn't been as much of an issue as I'd worried it might be.

I can't speak from my own experience, but we were just at a playdate where the mom had a kiddie pool on the deck with an alphabet puzzle mat underneath (like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Crawling-Activity-Non-toxic-Waterproof-Alphabet/dp/B078GDW1PM) - she said they had used it all summer and had worked well for them. Not sure what brand, but might be worth looking into?

I have a baby pool and baby splash pad/sprinkler that I really want to set up for my almost 1 year old and 3 year old to use. My grassy front yard is slopped so it’s tricky to set up there. My backyard is mostly pavement (the grassy part is also slopped with a steep drop so we fence that off from the kids). I think our older daughter would be fine with the set up in either location but since our youngest is still a little unsteady as a new walker, I feel like either location is tough for her to maneuver. She’ll trip more on the sloppy front yard than smooth pavement but it’ll hurt more to fall on pavement. So I was thinking of adding some waterproofed playmats under the baby pool and splash pad and setting it all up in the backyard. Anyone done this before that can suggest easy and quick to dry mats? I know most playmats are usually waterproof but I think that contemplates more drool and dropped sippy cups not hoses and pools so I’m worried that much water will cause mold or other issues.
