Like others have mentioned, we cut our own hair, makes sure to buy necessities when there are double layers of discounts/deals, switched our phones to Ting, and don't eat out without a coupon or using our credit card cashback to pay for it.

We really are gung-ho about tax-advantaged accounts beyond just retirement. I have an HSA that is invested and this year I also have a dependent care and medical FSA. I have my paycheck set to go to three different bank accounts so I never even see the money I've earmarked for saving.

We meal plan with plantoeat and I check the fliers at two stores to see what is on sale weekly. I check Sprouts for produce and meat sales and our local Kroger affiliate for everything else. That way I only have to shop two stores and I'm pretty confident I'm getting the best deals without wasting too much time driving around. Once a month I go to the bread store outlet near us and get tons of bread/bagels/buns for 1/4 price.

I also do a lot of research for anything over $40. Online reviews, Consumer Reports, forums. In the time it takes me to research, I'm either convinced it is an awesome idea and know what a good price for it is, or I've decided I don't need it that much.

@Coral: I'll have to find out. It is super rare if we have two tv's on at the same time but it would be nice to know. I did the math and because I would have to keep comcast internet in order to not break the contract, along with sling and hulu I would be saving $75! not bad

@bubblegum: So you can have it for multiple devices but I believe it can only be used by one device at a time. So, we have it in two rooms but can only use one tv at a time (which isnt a problem.)

@bubblegum: Nope. I'm on the site now and if you click back and forth, most overlap but not all. For example orange has ESPN but blue doesn't. Only the $50 ultimate package has both.

But it seems like you can get either and then also add extra packages for $5 (sports is $10).

@bubblegum: Yes you can!

You can watch Sling TV on all of your favorite compatible devices. ... If you subscribe to our Sling Blue service you can enjoy up to three streams of these channels at one time! This means you can enjoy FOX on your big screen, while your computer streams AMC, and catch up on the news with CNN on your mobile device.

I have a bit of a spending problem ... not like major credit card debt or big ticket items, but $5 here, $10 there, and it adds up!!!

We are moving in April and we REALLY need to stick to a budget while we have two mortgages (before our current house sells). :/

@gingerbebe: high-low is a good way to put it. We will spend on certain high quality things that will last (nice stroller, clothes and shoes for adults) and good quality food. But I also do tons of sale shopping and bargain hunting for household stuff and kids clothes. I think not eating out is a big saver for us. We eat out maybe once a week. "Cheap" takeout isn't really a thing here (and we don't really do fast food), so if we are going out, it's to a restaurant and automatically at minimum €40. We also don't have a TV, so no cable bills, and we don't have a car, so none of those expenses either. When we travel, we try to use points for hotels and we are flexible when possible to find cheaper airline tickets.

I cut all of our hair and use almost no toiletries. Minimized gift giving as mentioned above. Stick close to home for vacations. Cell phone with ting and no cable, just internet. Call around for insurance (homeowners, auto, etc), cable, any and all bills where you have options. Max out retirement contributions to minimize your tax burden. Lots of other good ideas here!

@Ms. RV: ditto on cutting my own hair. I haven't had a haircut at a salon ever in my adult life. The last time was when I was 12 I think and only because my mum had a coupon otherwise she just cut our hair because I only ever wanted/needed a trim!

We also do our own car repair and maintenenance unless it's something too big. My husbands dad is a mechanic so hubby is pretty into cars and has worked on them since he was a teen. My dad taught me how to change the tires when I was a teenager, but now you guys are making me want to learn other stuff and relearn tire changing!

We have no cable, keep snacks at work to avoid buying lunch, and haven't bought new clothes for several years. The kids have a ton of gifted and secondhand clothes. Now that they're growing out of it, we're passing it forward to others with little kids... They have way too many toys so we stash away some birthday presents unopened to give as gifts for other birthdays. And the biggest thing is, we live in an apartment that's way too small.

I used to coupon a lot when we were first married and then sorta didn't have time anymore. But before each of my babies were born I also deep stocked up on things we would need those first few months. I made a lot of freezer meals and stocked up on diapers, shampoo, wipes, soap, detergent, all paper products, etc. I deep couponed and looked for deals (basically just Amazon or Target) and we didn't need to buy household stuff for like 4-6 months after each kid was born. I also had a ton of baby food and pouches and puffs stocked up too - I think both boys had 2 months of food each.
