The only thing I would add is to look into what can be most quickly and easily serviced in your area, as being out a major appliance while waiting for service is the worst :meh:

Just chiming in as a big fan of our Whirlpool gold dishwasher. We installed it new 6 yrs ago when we bought our house and use the heck out of it. It functions perfectly despite our being lazy about cleaning the trap/filter and the racks still slide in and out smoothly. Our IL's put in a new GE dishwasher 2 yrs ago when they redid their kitchen and the shelves already are a huge pain to slide in/out and the layout of the interior is just not as functional as ours.

Also, I would stay away from the stainless dishwasher interior - it just always looks dirty to me due to hard water and soap residues, but maybe that's the water where we live. I don't think there's a functional difference, but if you're paying more for that feature it would be a no from me.

I am desperate to replace our oven and fridge but both function fine right now and are old enough that there is no resale value for us to offset the cost of new ones. Until then I just lurk on these threads and remember the brands people love :)

Happy shopping!

We have the slate appliances from GE and LOVE them. They don't show finger prints and go really well with the greige tones in our house. We bought them all as a set: stove, fridge, dishwasher, and built in microwave for under 3k. You can save money by buying a bundle. Also, we opened up a Home Depot card to get their discount, bought a coupon off Ebay for an additional discount.

We've been replacing-as-we-go... The last thing is the stove, which is white. But our dishwasher & fridge are stainless.

I regret the stainless honestly, it scratches so easily with kids.

@honeybear: thank you for this! My parents had a horrible experience with kitchenaid customer service as well. Good to know about LG.

We were actually considering putting the current fridge in the basement if we keep it and it fits.

I would replace and donate because you're nearing the built-in obsolescence of those appliances anyhow. THAT waste is totally on the manufacturers, not you.

However, I likely wouldn't do a matched set unless you're just doing it for resale. I get the best d/w, oven, and refrigerator in my budget and coordinate them as best as possible. I have unfortunately done more appliance shopping than I prefer to and I don't think you usually get the best individual items for your budget by doing a set from a single brand. I don't mind the visual "discord" of different labels on the fronts of my appliances. They're not that big. As long as the overall finishes look reasonably coordinated, it's fine with me, because no appliance sits right next to another appliance in many kitchens anyhow. If you go black SS, your sink (which probably also stands out visually in the kitchen) isn't going to coordinate, either, right? I think there's a tendency in housing choices generally to get too concerned about looks over function, when the function is the part that will really drive most people nuts if it's not right. That perfectly coordinated d/w will make you mad every time you use it if it's got an awful interior layout for your dishes, you know?

As for making the current fridge a garage fridge, I would not do that. Garages are not good environments for refrigerators. It's better to give it away to someone who will put it inside their home unless maybe you live like an hour or more away from a grocery store and only go once a month or feed a huge horde of people every day or something. I get why people have things like chest freezers (but still, not in the garage!), but a second fridge seems like a bad idea to me except in relatively unusual circumstances.

ETA: I've had really bad experiences with multiple LG appliances and their customer service. I'll never buy from them again.

@Umbreon: I love our kitchenaid dishwasher but can’t say anything for their other appliances, our others are whirlpool which are fine but nothing amazing. We do have a kitchenaid has cooktop that is a nice size/power - we have drawers underneath it and oven is in the other wall.

Thank you so much everyone!

Do you have any Brands to recommend? The one thing that's really getting to me is the fact that our current range has a warming drawer but I can't seem to find that feature. The only range I seen it that's in our budget is a Samsung one. But we don't like the fridge that goes with it. If we are to replace all of them we should probably do it right and get all the same brand right?

The other brand we were considering was LG. But the oven wont have the warming drawer.

We havent looked at kitchenaid or whirlpool yet. Maybe they would be better than LG

@bakingdoodle: @Umbreon: we have kitchen aid black stainless appliances installed in 2017 and haven’t had any problems with scratches and I feel like our house is chaos with 2-4kids at any time and 3 cats for whatever that’s worth. I actually feel like scratches and dirt/fingerprints were way worse when we had regular stainless

@Umbreon: I would replace all at the same time since finishes can change, go out of production, etc. Not all stainless steel is the same and a kitchen can look mismatched from just having different types of stainless.

I love the look of black stainless steel but it scratches easily as it' just a treatment over stainless steel. each brand have their own proprietary formula. scratches would be more visible than regular stainless....

Yep i would replace all. Our fridge went, then our chest freezer, then our dishwasher over about a 6 months span. Now I wish we did our oven and even washing machine and dryer since I feel we are on borrowed time and it would be nice to have them all the same and take advantage of a package discount. We actually got our original dishwasher for like $50 from a fb group of someone upgrading, and we gifted our busted chest freezer to someone who could fix it for cheap. Do it!

@Umbreon: I tore up a really pretty kitchen when I moved into my house so that I could have the one I wanted. I used money that really should have been applied to something else. All that to say, sometimes I guess we just do things that might seem wasteful to other people, including ourselves. I don't know. I for sure would keep the existing fridge for the garage. I don't know what I would do without my garage fridge now that I've had one for a few months. And like someone else said... donate the stove. So many people will be happy to have it.

Since you can afford it, I wouldn't hesitate to replace if you want to, and would just offer the stove for free to ease any guilt about waste. Local Buy Nothing groups are great for this kind of stuff!

@ElbieKay: This is our forever home so we aren't concerned with resale value. But donating isn't a bad idea. I guess we could always put it up for free too, as long as someone is willing to come get it. Most stores (if not all) will take the old one... I just feel like it's a waste if it's going to be disposed of.

@agold: That crossed my mind too. We can definitely swing all three... I guess in general we don't tend to spend a lot of money though so that's probably playing into the guilt a little bit too.

How long do you plan to live there? I would consider the resale value of mismatched vs matching appliances. I bet you could find someone to donate the stove to.

If you have the money, then do it! It will be nice to have them all match. Keeping the current fridge as a second in the garage is a good idea. But, if you don't have the money, then just do what you can do. Even if you just do the fridge and dishwasher, you can do the stove at another time.

We've been in our house for 7 years. The last owners bought the house in 2008, and I know they were the ones who put these appliances in. However we don't know how old they are.

The dishwasher needs to be replaced. Our fridge and dishwasher right now are black, the stove is stainless steel with a black trim.

We really like the black stainless steel but if we get that then we'll have three appliances in three different finishes. (The black we have now looks plasticky...I hate it)

We can afford all new appliances, I guess I'm just feeling guilty that the fridge and stove still work. He would try to hold on to the fridge as a second fridge if we have the room, but the stove we would get rid of somehow.
