@Foodnerd81: I agree that does seem like a silly rule! If there was an accident or something I would want to be wearing my babe and I would then have both hands free!

@shopaholic: Well... never thought I'd see a flight attendant have a screaming freakout like that dude a couple years ago, but that happened too.

@sunny: Nice to know that you did well on the cross-country flights! We're doing a cross-country, then trans-atlantic flight when LO will be 3+ months old.

@zippylef: Crazy! I've seen babies in baby carriers, and I doubt there are many flight attendants that want to stop a BF mama so a baby could scream all through take-off/landing.

@zippylef: do you know the reasoning behind the no attached thing? That seems safer to me but I'm probably missing something.

I saw so many babies on my flights this week and most of them were really good but I'm still scared. I hate flying now I can't imagine it with a baby!

@Thehistoryofus: Yes. The baby is not technically allowed to be "attached" to you during takeoff and landing. They can also refuse to let you breastfeed at those times for the same reason.

We did London-Philadelphia-St Louis a couple weeks ago and we're going back in a couple weeks. We flew US Airways and I was very surprised how friendly and helpful they were. The staff at Heathrow was amazing while the staff at PHL left something to be desired. The flight attendants were all very nice and understanding though.

(My LO was 8 months of the 1st leg and she'll be 9 months on the way back)

I don't understand why you wouldn't be allowed to wear the baby during take off and landing. Is this something standard?

@yoursilverlining: I don't think there was a microwave... thats why they mentioned the hot/cold water. That's how I do it at home anyhow. I don't know if you'd need to bring a thermos or something to put the bottle in for warming.

@Ree723: Yay for you too! Our flights weren't nearly as long.

@shopaholic: We flew Air Canada (cross country 4.5 hrs), United Express (1.5 hrs) and United (cross country, 5.5 hrs). LO is 4 months old. She breastfed during takeoff/landing for each flight but the white noise/vibration didn't knock her out like I hoped it would.

Questions:
- What airline(s) did you fly? Length of flights?
- How old is your LO?

I just survived my first flights with an infant as well! We flew 33 hours from Australia to London and then two weeks later, flew from London to Chicago. 2 out of our 3 flights were great but the 14 hr nonstop from Singapore to London was with a fairly snotty flight attendant unfortunately. BA more than made up for it though as they upgraded us on our flight to Chicago and bent over backwards being helpful and couldn't stop cooing over our 6 month old. We have 4 more weeks until we do another 24 hr journey back to Australia, hopefully it's another good experience! All of our planes had change tables in every bathroom and whilst I didn't need it, they offered to warm any bottles up and said they had food if we wanted it as well. We also waited to eat until after everyone was done and they had run out of the meal we wanted so they gave us a first class meal instead, definitely can't complain!

Great news about the first two flights, sorry to hear the third was such a bummer. Maybe they'd just had a really fussy baby on their last flight and were afraid of a repeat?

I'm glad to hear you survived your first flight! We're flying with LO in 2 weeks, and I'm nervous! Would the crew let you use the microwave on the first 2 flights to warm a bottle?

We survived baby's first plane trip! Woohoo! It was very interesting to see the different reactions from the crew. We took 3 flights and the first 2 crews were really friendly, the 3rd one not so much (but they seemed a little surly to other passengers as well).

The first crew asked if this was our first trip and instructed me on the best way to hold baby during turbulence and let me know where the change table was and that there was hot & cold water available for bottles. They told me that they'd drop off the infant life vest if needed.

The second crew was super friendly and came by to say hi to baby a few times. They also let us know where the change table was and that there was hot & cold water. The infant life vest was put in my seat pocket and they said they'd pick it up at the end of the flight.

The third crew barely acknowledged us. They told me that there was no microwave to warm bottles. I had to ask whether or not there was a change table and unfortunately there wasn't (even though this was the largest plane we flew, by far). There was no mention of life vests. The flight attendant also told me (with a pretty brusque tone) that the baby wasn't allowed in the Baby K'tan for takeoff and landing.

How has your experience been with flying with an infant?
