My situation was a bit different because I exclusively pumped. It took a year to conceive our first baby, and I couldn't even try to get pregnant before baby was a year old due to C-section. Even when I decreased pumping to 1-2 times per day, I still didn't get my period, so I completely stopped at 12 months. Got pregnant on the first try this time at 33 years old. Age was a factor for me because I wanted to have my babies before I turned 35. I would have had lots of regret if I waited too long, and then I couldn't get pregnant.

I agree with above to think about cutting night nursing if you do any. My first stopped night nursing around 3m and af arrived right at 7m so my cycle must have started right when she started solids. My second nursed once or more per night until he weaned and I did not see af until then (~13m). Everyone is different but might help. I’d probably do that and then think about weaning completely to do meds at 12m since that worked well for you before. Good luck!

I'm familiar with this feeling of pressure--the feeling of a ticking clock, but wanting to be present and enjoy the moment with your children. It is tough.

We went back to the RE when our first daughter was six months old, and he shared they would do exactly what worked last time (like you, injectables and an IUI), and that we couldn't do that if I was nursing at all. I hoped to nurse for at least a year, so that put a pause on all things TTC.

I like the advice of thinking about how long you hope to nurse for and make a plan from there. You could also decide just how aggressive you want to be with the TTC game.

I've also been thinking about this recently. I'm AMA and have one LO. Initially the plan was to wean him at a year and start TTC for another then. It took us about a year to get pregnant with him. I think I'd be ready to TTC by his first birthday, but I'm increasingly feeling like I'd really like to continue breastfeeding past a year. No period yet, so I think I may just play it by ear.

My cousin in law is having a healthy pregnancy with first and she’s 47! If this were me I’d weigh what I want for my baby that is here and now in terms of breastfeeding vs the potential baby.

I feel like I could have written this myself! (Except I'm still on the fence about a 3rd.) How long is your ideal for nursing your baby? Because of age, I'd probably weigh your desire for a 3rd baby with your desire to nurse your baby. My friend stopped nursing her first at 6 months so she could start trying for her second asap. I'd probably first try to stop nursing during the night. So cut out all night nursing and maybe you will start to ovulate soon. Give that a couple of months try, and then start cutting back from there. Because even if your goal is 12 months nursing, maybe you can still make it to that and get back to ovulating without fully stopping. I hope it all works out for you! I'm so excited for you to try for a third and wish I knew one way or the other how things will go for me (leaning towards no on this particular day!)
ETA: I'd sort of get to TTC asap.. you never know when that first egg is going to drop and maybe you can catch it!! (I say this as someone who needed IVF for first baby and then surprise pregnancy with the second while I was nursing)

@CatchAFallingStar: I'm a very young mom but I really don't think 41 is too old to go for a third. Personally I would cut back nursing since baby's already started the weaning process and I see increased chance of the family I want as more important than more months nursing, but I've never made it seven months nursing anyway so take that for what it's worth. But that's just what I would do, obviously your OB is the expert in this situation.

Speak with your OB about what is best! I don’t think age should stop anyone! I’d just believe you should run it across with your docs and see what’s best! Go for it!

I'm not in your position, but I wonder if your doctor might offer some advice or help you weight the pros/cons? There is a lot for you to weigh here, its not an easy decision to make.

Hi, ladies!

My DH and I have two little gals. Almost 4 and 7 months. We want one more baby. However, I just turned 40. He's 41. We had a little trouble getting pregnant both times and used IUI with injectable drugs, which worked first try with both babies.

I didn't get my period back until 18 months after DD1 due to breastfeeding. I'm breastfeeding this time as well and probably won't ovulate until then again. By that time, I will be 41.

Would you try to cut back on nursing to bring ovulation/period back sooner? Anyone else in a similar situation?
