@Mama Bird: Yes-- It's so much easier to nurse to comfort her than anything else, especially when I'm tired too. @oliviaoblivia: Yeah, there is a good chance weaning will be harder on me than her. I can't really even fathom it at this point, so it's definitely going to be a while.

This thread is interesting for me, because we're past a year old and nowhere near weaning! LO nurses for comfort, but I think milk is still a big part of his nutrition and hydration too, since he hasn't taken a bottle since 7 months and hadn't really mastered drinking from any kind of cup yet.

When he had a fever last week, I was so thankful to be nursing because he refused any other way of dining that we offered. We'll see how this goes!

DS was a comfort nurser at night until like 14 months, because teeth. Many teeth. It's a good thing we didn't wean earlier, because it was so much easier to nurse a screaming baby to sleep than spend an hour rocking him / singing to him / trying to convince him that screaming at 3 AM is not nice to neighbors. And when the teeth were out, the nursing stopped.

He did take a bedtime bottle for a few months more... not the best habit, but we knew he was ready to give that up when it stopped making him sleepy.

I hope weaning is easy when you're ready to stop! It seems like it gets easier when they're older, but every baby's different :)

DD was always a comfort nurser but got really intense about it after I went back to work at 12 months. She started nursing for 40+ minutes every morning and doing the same when I got home from work. 40 minutes is just not doable before work.

I was actually shocked at how easily she weaned considering how attached to it she was. I stopped offering the morning she turned 15 months and she didn't seem all that bothered. If she asked for it "Ba?" I handed her a cup of milk.

I think I had a harder time with weaning than she did.

Good luck! :goodluck:

I am dreading weaning. I have no idea how we're doing to do it. When I get home from daycare with M, she freaks if I don't nurse her right away (even though she normally gets a bottle at daycare an hour or two before we get home). She just hasn't seen me all day and wants to nurse (which is sweet, but it's going to be a pain to break that habit!).

LO wasn't a huge comfort nurser as a baby, but as a toddler he definitely was--he nursed before every nap and night time, not from hunger but just because he found it soothing, i guess? We just did it very slowly..the nap time sessions were the hardest, but it only took 1 day, around 15/16 months, for us to nap train to get rid of that. The night time nursing he eventually pretty much dropped on his own, and the morning nursing session also was dropped really easily.

DS was a huge comfort nurser!

Weaning wasn't planned it just kind of happened.

He was 20 months and pulling at my shirt and asking for milk - I was just tired and didn't feel like nursing. I told him "All gone" "Empty" "No more milk"

He cried and cried.

I gave in.

He nursed for about 20 seconds then got down and walked away.

He never asked to nurse again.

If your LO was a big comfort nurser, what was weaning like?

C is much faster these days, but at almost 11 months she definitely still has her times when nothing comforts her like the boob. For example, yesterday I had nursed before her nap but she just could not fall asleep, so I went and laid down with her and let her nurse and she slept like that for an hour. I know she wasn't hungry or getting much milk, but just holding her wasn't cutting it. I'm not really close to weaning her anyway, but I'm kind of scared to lose that no fall comfort.

I really never expected to be an "extended breastfeeder" but here I am, nowhere near ready to stop!
