My LO is 17 months and for the past 5 months we've had periods where she'll only nurse once or twice a day and we've been trying to wean her - but then she gets a tooth or cold and she starts nursing more. I always think it's PMS or I'm pregnant but I'm neither pregnant or gotten my period so I'm pretty sure it's related to when she's nursing less. I don't really feel overall sadness but I'll cry at any slightly sentimental thing and def a bit more anxious and sleepless.

Thanks ladies, it's reassuring to hear I'm not alone. And thanks for the link to Joanna Goddard's article... what she describes feeling is so close to what I'm feeling, I could have written it myself.

I had PPD, but it was at its very worst when I was in the midst of weaning (4 mo). I was feeling like a failure and sad that I wasn't able to be successful and sad at seeing DD take a bottle. I transferred my anxiety about breastfeeding to other things, such as napping, schedules, etc. and that's when I realized I really needed to talk to someone. I think it will be good to talk to your OB. Also, your hormones are probably all out of whack and it will take some time to adjust. Hang in there!

I'm sorry you're feeling this way. I first heard about depression after weaning on this blog: http://joannagoddard.blogspot.com/2012/02/motherhood-depression-and-weaning.html

She shares some resources in her post. Best of luck!

I'm so sorry. This might be helpful: http://joannagoddard.blogspot.com/2012/02/motherhood-depression-and-weaning.html

I read it last year and was shocked that it's not more openly discussed. It makes lots of sense that weaning and depression would happen simultaneously.

((((hugs)))) you're right, they don't prepare you for this stuff. When I stopped pumping during the day and started breastfeeding only mornings and nights, I was awake all night and sad about it, too. Especially after he started to refuse the morning feeding, and now the night time feeding as well.
I try to find happiness in that he's getting big, he started walking this week! And everything I've done to nourish and nurture has got him there.
I'm sorry I don't have much for advice but I wanted you to know you're not alone.

I've been very slowly weaning my 7 1/2 month old daughter, I started by dropping one feeding and stayed with that schedule for 3 weeks. Due to other circumstances I ended up having to fully wean about 2 weeks later. Ever since I dropped the remaining feedings I haven't been myself... I'm not sleeping, I feel like I have a heavy weight on my chest, I'm feeling isolated and like I can't cope with life. (I have an appointment with my OB tomorrow.)

There's so much information and awareness about PPD immediately after birth, but so little information about depression after weaning. Has anyone else experienced this?
