@birdofafeather: that's partly why I stopped pumping--I wasn't getting anything anymore! it soooo wasn't worth it. I thought lo would stop nursing eventually because I swear there's not much there, but I think it must be so much more of a comfort thing than an actual nutrition thing at this point.

@T.H.O.U.: good idea!

@mamabolt: oooh interesting. I have been assuming that it'd be easiest to wean this way, but I have to decide if I really can say no if she asks to nurse again when I get back.

i weaned at 18 months, but had been gone from her for 2 nights the month before. i brought my electric pump to make sure i wasn't uncomfortable, but forgot some parts. i borrowed a friend's pump and barely got an ounce! so i gave that up. but i was nursing 2x a day max at that point. i would just expect to hand express if uncomfortable and maybe pick up some sudafed like mentioned about to dry you out more!

@nana87: I was open to weaning, but both times LO enthusiastically returned to nursing when I got back (and another trip at 32 months as well)! We ended up stopping on her 3rd birthday because I was DONE and it was a hard deadline that she could understand.

@nana87: Yea Sudafed or Benedryl. Maybe even just pack some just in case you need it from pain.

@mamabolt: ooh sage extract, interesting! I'm going overseas too...did you wean with your trips, or keep nursing afterwards?

@T.H.O.U.: Hmmm I'm not sure about the longest! I've gone a full workday before (like, 8-6) and most nights go all night without nursing. It's usually more like 3 times--morning, after daycare pickup at 3, and bedtime. It gets to 5 if she wakes up motn or on the weekends if she nurses before her nap. But we skip sessions often and it's fine. Like, last weekend I went out for dinner before our bedtime nursing session, so I didn't nurse her between about noon and 7am the the next day, and I wasn't that uncomfortable. What meds do you mean? I've heard that Sudafed can dry you up?

I went away at 23 months when LO was nursing 2-3x a day and I dealt with engorgement (it was also an overseas trip so I had a long plane ride to deal with). I brought my electric pump mostly because I didn't want to deal with getting my hands on a new one in a foreign country. At 27 months I traveled again and only brought a manual and just pumped to take the edge off when needed. That would be my recommendation to you. When I finally wanted to dry up I think sage extract helped me a lot.

Whats the longest you've gone between nursing sessions? If she's still nursing up to 5 times per day, I would be careful going cold turkey unless you plan to take meds to dry up fast.

tl;dr version: if you weaned a toddler, did you have to deal with any engorgement issues? do you have any tips?

I have a weeklong business trip coming up next week, which means it's also time to wean lo... :crying: She's 21 months, and I only nurse 3-5 times/day, and I don't even know how much she gets, but she LOVES it and we dealt with tons of supply issues and worked so hard to get here that I hate being the one to end nursing. I really, really wanted her to self-wean but she hasn't yet. I haven't pumped since August and she's off bottles, and I definitely don't want to bring my electric pump with me, so this is going to be it...waaaaaah this is also the first time I'll be away from her overnight....

Since I don't think I have much supply anyway (we skip sessions from time to time anyway without too much discomfort) I'm hoping it'll be okay/not too uncomfortable for me...?

Did anyone else wean an older child sort-of-cold-turkey like this? I mean, I really don't think I have much supply anyway...Should I bring a manual pump? Or just expect to hand express a lot? Any other tips? I'd love to hear how it went for you!
