Agree with possibly going for an earlier bedtime. Bedtime for my ten month-old is consistently about 3-4 hours after waking from her last nap. Anything longer than that and we are in for a rough night!

Also, when LO was about 6 months I started a new nap-time routine that might work for you: I get her ready to sleep, then go stand near the crib, and I "rock" her while standing. I sing 3 songs, then put her down in the crib. Now as soon as I go stand my the crib and start rocking she lays her head on my shoulder and quiets down.

I second what @Bluebonnet: said. That was my first thought when you said "wired when tired". That is a sure sign of overtiredness.
How long is your 6 month old spending awake at a time?

Have you tried putting LO down earlier? With LO1, we were inadvertently putting her down when she was overtired. Once we started to put her down the second she showed any tired signs, she went down easier and we were finally able to master "drowsy but awake"

Most of the sleep books talk about how when a baby is too tired, cortisol kicks in and they become wired and harder to put to sleep. Could this be what is happening with your LO?

LO is 6 months and has been rocked to sleep since he was about 2 months old (when he stopped falling asleep spontaneously!). We want to gently wean him from rocking in the next few months.

I've looked up several methods and they all seem to be variations of "put down drowsy but awake". When our baby is put down drowsy, he becomes extremely distressed and/or hyperactive. There's no chance of him calming enough to fall asleep!

We're at a loss. How do we help him stay in a calm drowsy state? We aren't entertaining the idea of CIO and the gentler methods don't seem to account for babies who become wired when tired!

Any ideas? Thanks!
