So I've started talking to DD about not chewing on her hippo or koala anymore (her two loveys), and how it hurts her teeth. And I told her at night after she falls asleep I'm going to take it out of her mouth. Usually this has resulted in a MOTN wake up and crying. But last night she didn't cry and just found it herself again. And this morning when getting ready for school she picked up her stuffed kitty and said "I want to use this for nap time instead of hippo. And I won't chew on it" So.....maybe this is the start? Maybe if I just keep talking to her about it she'll decide for herself? Kinda like how we did potty training. Fingers crossed....

IF she's still chewing on them in the Fall, I may just say that school won't allow it and let them kinda deal with her nap!

Argh! I could have written this post!

LO is 3.5 years old now, and STILL suck on his lovey! Now it gets so gross to a point that he wants a "wet blankie" instead of a dry one because somehow the wet blankie soaked with his saliva brought him comfort or something :( Sighhhh

At school they somehow was able to wean it but at home he just wouldn't go to sleep without it. I tried to wean him when he turned 2 but I gave up. I attempted to take away for a few nights, it always ends very badly, he either woke up in the middle of the night crying while searching for his lovey, or he'd just throw a fit and won't be able to go to sleep.

I talked to our dentist, and they said while yes it is going to affect his teeth, they are more for whatever that can get them to sleep they are OK with it. They actually told me they'd be OK as long as he only sucks on it at night, not during daytime/naptime... but he does suck on it at naptime at home. Considering the fact that he goes to daycare 5 days a week, I kinda let it slide.

Then I talked to a friend and her husband is a psychologist. He said it is cheaper and easier to fix a teeth alignment problem, than a life-long bill of psychological treatments... because who knows this can create an effect and what not.

I am definitely following this discussion though!

YES! I've done it successfully at age 2. Our big thing was making sure she didn't do it at daycare either, so it started with us saying how icky it was (because it's disgusting and her corners were a different color than the rest of the blanket) and then every time I saw her sucking on it I said "oooh yucky mommy needs to wash it." And I would take it from her for a little bit to "clean" it. She hated that I did this and would stop. She did however start to rub her face with it, but at least it wasn't in the mouth and wet.

Following! I have the same problem with my just turned 3 year old :( I have tried telling her not to bite baby, it hurts him... if she's in a playful mood she will stop and hug him instead, but if she's sleepy or upset I don't have the heart to make her stop. We just switched to a new daycare and the teacher is a little grossed out by it, I think, which is a good thing..!! haha. It looks like she keeps it away from her all day which is good.

@BeachMama: I wonder if there was something you could put on it to deter her - like lemon juice? Its safe but probably wont taste very good to her

I went in and took the lovey out of her mouth after the was asleep both nights this weekend. And both nights she ended up waking up and crying in the middle of the night. I think I'm gonna wait until my 4 month old is sleeping a little better before I tackle this! We may try cutting off the corners of the lovey, though I think she'll just suck on it anyway.

Ugh, my son is almost 11 months and since about 6 months, chewing and sucking on the lovey has been his jam. But we only give it to him for sleep and he only sucks on it until he falls asleep and then he's good. Unless he's teething. But I hope it doesn't affect his teeth!? I noticed his lower 2 teeth are slightly crooked but I was hoping it was just a fluke.

I'm with you. My daughter does that and she's 2.5. I have no idea how to wean. If the dentist doesn't say anything then I probably won't haha. I feel like weaning from a paci is so much easier cuz you can cut the tip or something like that. If you figure something out let me know!

DD is 3 and has always chewed/sucked on the corners of her lovey for comfort. We just saw the dentist who could tell by looking at her teeth that she sucks on something. They didn't specifically tell me she needed to stop but I'd like to kick this habit before it really affects her teeth. Not to mention it's kinda gross.

Has anyone weaned your LO from their lovey? I'm not quite sure how to handle it. I don't want to take it away from her completely if I can get her to cuddle with it instead of sucking on it. As of now she only uses it for naps and bedtime, and if she's really upset.
