Started weaning at 12 months and was completely done by 13 months. I'm sure he would have gone longer but I was DONE!

It was a group effort. She dug WCM and sessions dropped from 6 down to 2 or less in a couple weeks. Ultimately she regularly refused at 12.5 mo and I stopped offering. She only asked a few times during our whole nursing relationship.

I just didn't offer one time and he didn't ask again. He was 13 months and only nursing before bed anyway.

@junebugsmama: I think you hit the nail on the head in your post "it will be more gentle YOU and her" I think I'm going to have a much harder time with weaning than she will!! I think I'm going to keep nursing at least 3-4x a day until she hits 1 yr though, but then we will start cutting back. I may in this last month move it to just 3x a day. but yes, I will definitely be more mindful of when she wants to nurse!

@MrsBrewer: one thing you could do is be more mindful about when you nurse. Like at night, rock her first at wake ups but don't stress about it if it doesn't do the trick and she needs to briefly nurse. During the day, see if being busy distracts her and if she wants to nurse, offer a snack or drink first. Or even an activity to distract. But don't stress yourself out about deadlines or rules. I think that way would be much more gentle on you and her!

I got pregnant when LO was 14 months old and only nursing once a day. I dried up soon after (at about 8 weeks pregnant) and it was a relatively painless transition. She's a great solids-eater and only asked for nursing a couple of times. I just told her there was no more milk in there and distracted her with a toy. :P

@oskarsmommy: thanks for chiming in! I can definitely see me doing this as well. I think sometimes she's just overwhelmed and needs a little mommy/quiet time!

@MrsBrewer: yep... I felt I was being compassionate - the times I could really see he needed it, I gave in. I think being rigid and sticking to a plan may work for some, but it didn't for my son.

@junebugsmama: If she does wake up at night, yea I will still nurse her. This last month she has been sleeping more consistently through the night. but I think I am going to night wean for sure. If she wakes up I will only rock her back to sleep. maybe that's a great first step!

@MrsBrewer: that's my understanding about whole cows milk too. I voted other because I am sort of letting my LO self wean. I mean he's 16 months, and we do don't offer don't refuse during the day (sometimes I do offer if I want him to nurse now but not later lol) and we just night weaned. Does your LO still nurse at night? Some people get their periods back when they night wean. Other option would be to see if your LO slows down on the nursing if you offer milk with meals.

Or if you are done, great job!!! One year is so awesome! Both of nursing and just keeping your little baby alive and thriving!

For those that weaned, did you ever in the process just give in, and let your LO nurse? Even if there isn't much milk in there, but more or less as a way to soothe? I was thinking about that, and I see the benefits, but wouldn't that also confuse your LO too? weaning is all new to me! I wonder if I should start cutting back now?

I weaned, though by the point that I did there wasn't much supply anyway, and lo regularly skipped sessions. She was 22 months--I thought we were going to wean at 21 months when I was away from her overnight for the first time for about a week, but she wanted to keep nursing. But then I had a miscarriage and it hurt to nurse--I actually kept nursing through it, but she skipped a bedtime session one night, and then was distracted the next morning, so I just decided I was done. She def asked for it and wanted to nurse more, but it wasn't that bad.

@mrsrain: Yep, once she hits 1 year I'm going to introduce WCM. But from my understanding it's not supposed to exactly replace breastfeeding, but more or less just another way to add in calcium and good calories into their diet.

I had to. It still makes me sad, and 1 month into weaning, he still asks for it. But he is 27 months old, so, yeah, we are done. I think when you wait so long it makes it harder on both of you..

With my first I literally didn't offer one morning to see what she would do and she didn't care and never asked for it. I kind of regret that day I'd have like to have gone longer but she wasn't interested.

My second self weaned once I was six months pregnant and had a very diminished supply. Real food was more interesting for her.

Did you initiate the weaning, or did your LO initiate?

LO is 11 months old today, and I plan on keeping on going the way we are until 1 year (right now we are at morning, lunch time, before dinner, and before bed) but once she turns a year, I'm going to start weaning. It makes me sad, but I want another LO, and my period still hasn't returned!
