@Honeybee: I hope you figure things out too! I never tried dream feeding because I didn't want to stay up until 10! :p

@Sammyfab: He used to get up at four but go back to sleep immediately as long as we put him in his bouncy chair with the vibrations on; since I started weaning his nighttime bottles, though, he won't go back to sleep at four without eating.

I could do a dream feed at 10, instead of 9; I was just doing it right before I go to bed. If I don't dream feed at 9, though, he's up at 11 and then 2, just like normal.

I think tonight I'll try dream feeding him at 10 a full 4 ounces, and feeding him a full 6 ounces at his next waking. Then, tomorrow, I'll try lengthening his time between bottles so he eats more at each feeding. Hopefully, we'll get this whole thing figured out!

It's pretty early to wean a nightfeed and I think 2 per night at that age is normal, but I do agree that he should be able to go 4-5 hrs without eating. What if you pushed the dream feed later to 10-ish? I know the Baby Whisperer book recommends the dream feed to occur between 10-11.

Have you tried just soothing him back to sleep when he wakes at 4?

@zippylef: DD did it all on her own, too; I guess I just need to be more patient with DS!

I try to feed him more often during the day (every 2-3 hours), but then he doesn't take very much at each feeding. I could try lengthening the time between feedings to see if he'll take bigger bottles, though.

My LO is 14 weeks and she did it on her own. We've had 2 nights of 6-6 straight through this week. She started loading her calories during the day on her own too though. I noticed she started eating more during the day and that's when she started sleeping a long time at night.

Maybe he's getting too distracted to eat during the day? I'd see if you cant get him to eat more in the daytime.

@Thehistoryofus: If I don't do a dream feed, he gets up at 11 and then 2, again. So his first stretch is longer with no dream feed, but he still only does 3-4 hours between bottles.

@Honeybee: Hmm, maybe it would be easier to see if he would drop the dream feed. What does he do if you don't wake him up? I know at that age, my daughter would sleep from like 7-1, then from 1-4, and then like 4-6. So twice over a 12 hour period she would be up to eat but it was a longer stretch the first portion of the night.

@Thehistoryofus: Actually, I think he would go to bed earlier (like 6/6:30) except that it's more conveneint for us to keep him and DD on the same bedtime. He's also never done more than 6 ounces at a time, but maybe he's ready now? Most of the time, during the day he only takes 3-4 ounces at a time; it's only at night that he'll take 6...

Have you thought about pushing bedtime back and just giving one larger bottle? I think around that age my LO went to bed around 7 or so and then could sleep to almost 1 maybe.

So I've been working on weaning DS (3.5 months ) from his nighttime bottles. Previsouly, he would eat 4-6 ounces at bedtime (around 6:30/7); I would dream feed him 4 ounces around 9; he would get up once for 6 ounce bottle at 2; and then he'd be up for the day around 6/6:30.

For the last 1.5-2 weeks, I've been reducing his dream feed bottle and 2 am bottle. Last night I only fed him 3 ounces at 9, and 5 ounces at 2, but now he's started waking up at 4 to eat again! Somehow, he actually INCREASED his overall nighttime feedings, so while he was getting around 10 ounces total at night, last night he got 15! Every night has been a little more than the night before, so I don't think my weaning method is working.

Any suggestions? I don't mind feeding him at night right now, since he's still so little, but I feel like he ought to be able to go longer than 4-5 hours at a time without eating... Right?
