My LO is almost one so we'll be doing this soon. I want to stop bottles ASAP because frankly, I"m so tired of washing them. She's not really that interested in her after nap bottles and doesn't drink as much as she used to, so I'm not really worried about those. She's also so tired at night that I think it will be pretty easy to get rid of that bottle. It's the first one that I'm worried about.... hoping the sippy cup of milk works and if it doesn't I'll have food ready too.

We started the transition to sippy cup around 11m by replacing one bottle of BM with one cup of BM. When DD hit 12m we switched to cow's milk in the cup and then replaced all bottles with cups within about a week. DD would nurse first thing in the morning and at bedtime so we didn't have to wean from bottles at those times. When she stopped nursing I would introduce a sippy of milk in the morning and she didn't take anything to drink at bedtime once she stopped nursing.

We also switched to cows milk in the bottle and then took away the evening bottle first. We instead gave a sippy of milk with dinner and offered a sippy of water right before bed (we never bottle fed him to sleep once he weaned from the breast). We took away the morning bottle and offered a sippy of milk around 13 months or so. This created total melt down; however, we got past it by immediately offering breakfast with the sippy of milk as soon as he woke up, which distracted him enough to forget about a bottle of milk.

We transitioned DD right after she turned 1. First, we started giving her cow's milk instead of formula in her bottles. Then, we switched from bottles to sippy cups. She never held her own bottle, so in the very beginning, I would hold the sippy cup for her, just like I would give her a bottle. It didn't take long for her to figure out for to hold her sippy sup on her own, maybe a m onth or so; by 15 months she was using a sippy cup like a pro and never looked back.

We didn't have any issues transitioning; I really think it is much easier to do it at this age, before they become too attached to the bottle. Good luck!

Hi All -

My son is 13 months old and we have already cut out his mid-day bottles with no problem. He still has a morning and evening bottle. I have to admit that I am afraid to take away those last two bottles but I also am not sure how to do it.

I am going to eliminate the morning bottle first but am wondering how others have done this. Instead of sitting down with a bottle do you put them in the high chair with a sippy cup of milk? What strategy did you use? What age was your LO when you did it?
