We did naps and nighttime sleep training at the same time, per our ped's recommendation. Makes sense - I didn't want to confuse her with getting bounced to sleep during the day but not at night.

yes, we weaned naps and nighttime sleep at the same time...I just wanted to get it over with at once! Weaning off swaddling is tough but so much easier now just having to zip him up in a sleep sack.

We stopped with swaddling at 3.5 months. DD was clearly ready, and she did great going cold turkey to no swaddle. Rocking to sleep is a whole different story. DD is 7 months old, and she still gets rocked to sleep. I'm trying to wean her off of it, but it's an uphill battle.

@littlecasita1122: I find the rolling makes it so much worse when you're swaddle weaning, eh? One of the other bees had a great idea of tucking them underneath a blanket with the blanket tucked in the sides of the mattress...i left enough give so that she can roll over once, and it worked!

We stopped rocking probably when he was about 3 months old...we tried to replace the rocking with reading a story instead so we still had quiet time in the glider. He did cry the first few nights. We would do a version of CIO...we would wait 10 minutes, go in and give him a pacifier, rub his head gently and then wait another 10 minutes. I think he only got up to 30 minutes once so luckily we didn't have to deal with a whole night of crying. Now he will fuss for about 5 minutes before falling asleep on his own and will put himself back to sleep during the night if he wakes suddenly. He is 4.5 months old now.

For swaddling, we just weaned that a few weeks ago. He was rolling like crazy on his activity mat so it made me nervous. The first few nights were AWFUL (we did cold turkey instead of one arm out at first) but then he got much better with it. I would have to go in multiple times during the night to help him back to sleep. I would hold his arms tight to his body and slowly let up the pressure until he was asleep. We transitioned him to a sleep sack and he does well with it now.

I guess my only advice is if you're going to start, stick with it and give it at least a few nights before making any changes.

I wish i had weaned off swaddling and rocking all at once. Prior to doing CIO with LO, i would rock her until she fell asleep and gently put her in the crib. She would stick her fingers in her mouth and go to sleep.

Then she started rolling over from back to front and we had to wean her off the swaddle (i'm sure i have like 5 threads on the swaddle!). It was sooo painful! I couldn't rock her to sleep anymore because she'd be squirming in my arms.

Anyways, after we did CIO, i can now rock her until she gets a bit drowsy and then put her in the crib awake and she'll go to sleep. I put her in the crib wearing a sleep sack and will leave her lovey in the crib.

We just did both at the same time. I felt like I couldn't sleep train her while swaddled because then she couldn't self soothe. We used to have to bounce her to sleep every night. We did CIO. The first night she cried 20 min, the second night 10. Now she may fuss a bit or roll around a while but she falls asleep on her own. We also did naps and night time sleep at the same time.

@zippyleaf - I think LO is on the cusp of rolling over swaddled and she's also been able to break out of the miracle blanket a couple of times. LO is also a bigger baby (28 1/4 inches, 18 pounds), so it's been getting harder and harder to keep her swaddled. Did weaning from the swaddle involve CIO for you too? Were you also rocking your LO to sleep, or just placing her down swaddled?

I also tried swaddling her with one arm out today and she rolled onto her tummy and and got stuck in an awkward position. So I'm leaning more towards cold turkey with the swaddle now.

If your LO is not rolling in her sleep and endangering herself, i dont see why you have to stop swaddlng. We swaddle weaned at 6 months because C was rolling onto her face at night. Yes, it involved CIO.

If youre going to do both, then Id do it at the same time.

LO just turned 6 months and our doctor finally gave us the OK to stop swaddling, but she also told us we need to start teaching LO to fall asleep on her own. Double eeek! I'm not sure which one I'm more scared/stressed/worried about weaning. I'm assuming weaning from rocking will be some type of CIO sleep training. LO is already starting to get harder to put into her crib after a good rocking. She will fuss and cry the minute her head hits the mattress, her crying and fussing has also increased during her sleep. Are these all signs that we should start sleep training?

How did you wean your LO from rocking and/or swaddling? Should I start with one before the other or tackle both at the same time?

Thanks ahead of time for any advice or tips!
