I think it's a great idea, my LO was dropping nursing sessions on her own at that age anyhow, so it only makes sense for you to be able to slow down on the pumps.

You're doing a great job! Dropping a single pump session doesn't sound like much, but it makes a world of a difference.

I am so jealous of your freezer stash! You're a pumping rock star in my book!

Even though I hate pumping (a) because it blows, and (b) because I don't pump enough to cover all LO's feedings which makes me feel like a loser(!), I am still nervous and anxious about weaning. But I really need to because I really need something off my plate . . . my emotional bandwidth is maxed out right now.

@T.H.O.U.: yes, going to 3 has definitely made a huge difference!! I thought I wanted to quit NOW but now that it's 3 pumps a day, I feel like I can go another month or so.

@hellobeeboston: yup, my milk is in a separate chest freezer (haha, CHEST freezer for breastmilk) so it's good for up to 6 months!

@mediagirl: thank you!! I was satisfied with Wagon Jr. being EBF for 6 months, but the transition to formula was so horrible, I'm hoping to avoid that this go 'round!!

Awww. You have an awesome stash and you have done so well! No matter what happens, LMW has gotten the best from you for at least 8 months (with your stash). I'm sorry you were so sick, I know the feeling.... I'm glad you're feeling better, though!!

Aww, yeah I think I will be sad too... But wow! Impressive stash!! Can you use dozen milk that is 6 months old?? I thought it could only be stored for 3 or 4 months??

@mrs. wagon: I'm sorry you were so sick!!

I think that age is a good time to start cutting back on a pumping session. I remember at that age, I felt like I was going to be tied to my pump forever, and going from 4 to 3 made all the difference in the world. I think around 10 months old I went down to about 2 pumpings per day. I was able to make it to about 13 months of pumping before I finally was able to go all day without it and she had enough BM until she transitioned to WCM.

So I'm officially down to 3 pumps a day (used to be 4) because I was sick for an entire week. I was constantly worried that I'd end up with mastitis on top of the flu (and norovirus? and a sinus infection?) and after a few breakdowns Wagon Sr. suggested I start weaning myself from the pump. LMW is almost 8 months old now, and I weaned Wagon Jr. at 7 months.

I still would love it if LMW never had to drink formula, but I only have around 120 bags in my stash, which would only feed her for a month if she was being exclusively fed thawed breastmilk. So I think I will continue to pump 3 times daily for another month or so and see how far that takes us. My supply is tanking at a nice, gradual rate (probably because of the sudafed I had to take because of my debilitating sinus headaches!) so it's probably a good opportunity to just dry up slowly and avoid mastitis and plugged ducts.

It does make me a bit sad though. I feel so much satisfaction knowing I'm making enough yummy milk for her every day... and for the first time, I'm not pumping enough for her to drink daily. My oldest frozen milk is almost 6 months old at this point, so it's time to start using frozen milk no matter what, but I still get a little sad.
