All the "mimis" are cracking me up. My LO says "didi." I guess she's weird!

Incidentally, we didn't end up cutting the tips this weekend (I chickened out!). But we did limit her to only using the pacifier in her crib for naps and night sleep, and she has mostly been handling it ok. I think getting it down to sleep only will help alot. Thanks for everyone's comments!

DS was about 14 mo and just didn't want it one night and never asked for it again (same way he stopped BFing at 21 mo). He was obsessed as well.

DD is 18 mo and still has hers. I would like to get rid of it but it is such a comfort thing for her and she is frequently sick and uses it in the hospital. Sometimes, especially when falling asleep, she doesn't even want to suck on it, but rather twirls it around in her hand. She also always seems to know right where it is at.

@raintreebee: our dentist said the same (ha prob the same dentist!). He said it's not a problem til 3 or even 4. Before then any changes to the teeth can shift back. I just wanted to do it bc my LOs teeth were starting to protrude slightly and I didn't like that.

We left them for Santa a few months after he turned 2 and it was really an easy transition. I was shocked. He asked for it a few times, but we never even had any tears. But naps have been a lot more difficult and he definitely wakes up much earlier since we got rid of it

My son's dentist said that he doesn't recommend getting rid of the paci until 3 because they just aren't ready for it. Also, if you get rid of it too early, they might start sucking on their fingers, which is way worse. I've of course heard other opinions, but I just thought I'd throw that out there.

Daycare doesn't use one in the toddler room at all. The kids are "big boys and girls" and ALL the kids are totally fine with it... at daycare.

L is a paci fiend at home though and at one point had 4 of them all the time. He now is down to one and I'm hoping to get rid of it around his 2nd birthday in a couple months. I'm dreading it, but it needs to happen!

My LO is/was obsessed with her pacifiers! We have eliminated from all places except the car and her bed (when she was 2.5) The first week was a little hard, but we had a chart and she got a sticker for each morning and afternoon she didn't use it. At the end of the week, when she had 10 stickers, she was allowed to choose a small toy. It has been a couple of months and she doesn't try to use the pacifier during the day. We are getting ready to do the same thing with her car and bed pacifiers. Overall, it wasn't awful, but she definitely needed some sort of incentive. We will see how getting rid of the pacifier for sleep goes...I am very nervous about that one!

@blackbird: @Crisark: A calls her paci "Mimi" as well! No idea where she got it from, but he daycare teacher said its s common name for them.

With DS we noticed he was biting holes in them, so we took it away cold turkey. We had 2 bad naps and 1 bad night. DD is 22 months old and I can't foresee her giving up her Mimi any time soon. She's very attached to it. We'll probably go cold turkey again, but we're scared lol

We cut the tip at 2.5, he slept with it that night and didn't seem too upset. But the next day for nap he was hysterical, didn't want the broken paci and ended up not napping. Night time that night was also hard, but he went to sleep and didn't wake up that night. He had a hard time napping for the next week or so, and we ended up staying in his room with him until he fell asleep (still doing that now a month later). Night time got better, except now he takes forever to fall asleep. But he doesn't ask for it anymore. He does get up way earlier though. All in all, not nearly as bad as I thought, and he really loved his paci!

Cutting never worked for us. The only thing that worked was cold turkey at around the same age. LO is now 3 and still is obsessed with babies pacifiers. She would have never given it up willingly.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I wouldn't rock that boat! You are still in survival mode with a 5 week old! Just remember, they won't go to kindergarten with a paci.

Dd was only 13 months but I noticed she didn't want it while teething so I was an opportunist and snagged them all away while I had the chance! There was no issues. She was stealing other kids' at daycare though sometimes. Her teacher caught her in the corner, facing the wall with her hands covering her mouth with someone else's pacifier in it lol.

We weaned her down to only naps and nighttime by 2.5 but she was totLly obsessed and needed a handful in bed with her at all times. When Easter came around we talked up the Easter bunny and how if you leave pacis for him he gives extra chocolate. Night before Easter she gathered all the pacis, left them in her basket.... And slept perfectly fine! Not even a hiccup and she's never looked back. So have faith it might go smoothly!

We cut them back to mostly at night and definitely never at daycare (she was too distracted there to care).

Just after her second birthday we lost her last one. Had to deal with one bad night of sleep. The next day she found the missing one and we had to box it up and send it to the babies at school. She was pretty much fine within a week.

We eliminated it at 17 months (so not too far from where you are). We had it down to just sleep times. On a Friday I asked for it from daycare, so she wouldn't have it there when she returned on Monday and that night we put her down without. She protested minimally. It was actually way easier than I expected.

Daycare naps were hard for a week or so where they had to do more patting to get her to sleep.

We were down to night time and naps but then at the end of my pregnancy with DS I gave in and gave it back during the day. We went cold turkey at 26 months. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Daytime there were a few tantrums. Night time and naps were tough for awhile. It took a couple weeks for her to stop asking for it.

Around her first bday we developed the rule that pacifiers were only for sleep.

At 2.5+ she moved into a twin bed (this was very recent!) and a few days ago we just told her "pacis are for cribs and babies, but remember, you're a big girl in a big girl bed." She agreed and started sleeping without them. There have been a few wake ups but nothing terrible. She's getting used to it I think.

We maybe could have done this sooner but as a family we had a bunch of other things going on. Now if only she took to the potty this easily!
