I really like my Mei Tai carrier and we used it since DD was a newborn. I have this one:

@travelgirl1: Ring Slings were hard, but for #2 I was able to get the hang of a Moby. It worked well until about 15 lbs but I only spent $30 on it. So for the small time use I wasn't out a ton of money.

I didn't like my ring sling when my LO was a newborn. She was so floppy and it made me nervous. Around 2 mo I tried again when she was more sturdy and had some head control and it was love. So even if you don't love it now, maybe try it again in the future!

@travelgirl1: lol poor DH. Mercifully mine were hand me downs. I loved my ring sling with my preemie but I never figured it out for bigger babies once DS hit ten pounds it hurt so I never bothered to try with DD. Maybe just depends on body type? Or maybe I was doing it wrong. Adjusting the rails properly did help a bit.

in terms of tightening the rails, it really helps if 1, you have it pretty tight before you get him in, just loose enough to slip him in, 2, you start with the ring almost on top of your shoulder cause it inevitably lowers with tightening and its suppose to remain high like a brooch, and 3, you hold his weight up and towards you off the sling while you tighten.

@travelgirl1: ah gotcha. I've heard good things about them, too! i feel like if someone could show you how to tighten the rails right, it would help you feel more secure.

The ring sling was a life saver to me for my heavy newborn. We started when he was almost 2 mo though. He wasn't quite the right proportions to be comfortable in our tula, and the ring sling was the only one that tricked him into feeling like he was being held. It did get rough on one shoulder though as he grew and grew. And it had a bit of a learning curve. For me, it was the best as an aide to holding him to be at least partially hands free. I don't know if a smaller or differently built SSC would have been the same in those early days. Now the tula works great and the ring sling is not comfortable at all, but he's a giant (seriously...toddler sized) 7.5m. I also bought a baby hawk mei tai and I think that might have been more comfortable earlier when I was so reliant on the ring sling. Can you go to a baby wearing international meeting? I haven't been but I follow them on Facebook.

I really love my wrap conversion mei tai (mine's a Didytai but I'm sure they're all awesome) for carrying my big for his age baby. I still use the Babyhawk mei tai too, though it's not quite as supportive (because my straps aren't long enough to do some of the more supportive carries, since I'm plus size). But I'd definitely try a WCMT if you can! The extra support from the wrap straps makes a huge difference.

@snowjewelz: yeah there is one..... But I left the group recently after a disagreement with the admin.

@blackbird: I just can't seem to get the hang of it. It's a Sakura Bloom and I heard great things about it. I feel like I can never get it tight enough at the top and like I am not doing the seat properly. And that is my main worry as my daughter had hip dysplasia and while I don't think T does - hasn't had ultrasound yet but hips seem stable - I can't help worrying that I am not supporting his hips properly. And because I find it so hard I don't try it often and just hold him. Which is why I think I am just not suited to it.

@travelgirl1: I would just pop him in the ergo and make sure his belly is flat against you so he isn't hunched over and strap the shoulder straps on tightly and see what you think. I'm not sure that I prefer my beco strongly enough that I would buy one.

@Jess1483: @mauxie: For the sake of getting anything done today, I put him in the ergo without the insert (he is huge so he fitted quite well) and supported him with my hands and he fell asleep quickly. So I think I might try using just the pillow and see if that works.

Urgh, people rave about ring slings. I honestly thought I would love mine!

@mauxie: I am reluctant to try another wrap style carrier, I don't think I'm very good with them. I think SSCs are more fool proof :silly:

I have a beco and an ergo. I admit I prefer the beco for my 13 pound two month old because it is more supportive, but if I cinch the ergo tight enough it works fine without the insert. I think it depends on how floppy your newborn is. Mine was born pretty sturdy with a sturdy neck.

Don't bother getting a Gemini if you already have an Ergo. Just try the blanket trick - roll up an A&A or receiving blanket and put it under his bum, just like the pillow in the Ergo insert. I'll try to find a pic.

I never really loved SSCs though, but everyone has their own preferences. I liked using a mei tai best - no buckles (which always dug into me) and the tying is pretty easy. Babyhawks are really cute with lots of options and not super expensive, and Infantino makes a really inexpensive mei tai - maybe ~$20?

Don't want to be a downer, but I think unless you force yourself to continue to try the sling and grow to love it, it's not gonna happen...

Can you use your ergo without the entire infant insert, and just a rolled up blanket on the bottom so it's not as stuffy? A used beco?

Or, maybe a different wrap like a Solly Baby, instead of the ring sling?

I'm just starting to use my RS, and I'm definitely...not good at it. But if I'm going to eat, it's the easiest for me. My other carrier (a Fly Tai) is much more comfortable. You can use the Ergo with just the pillow part down below (not the big insert).

My baby was over ten pounds when he was born four weeks ago, and a c-section has meant my back feels weak. Carrying him in my arm is giving me backache and I think baby-wearing could really ease that.

So, I bought a ring sling but I hate it. I find it so fiddly and worry all the time that I'm not doing it right. When I wore him in it for about 20 minutes yesterday my back hurt. I'm starting to think it's just not worth it.

So I was thinking a SSC suitable from birth would be better. Thinking Beco Gemini. But DH will kill me because it's pricey and I already have the Ergo, but it's too hot here for the insert right now.

What do you think, baby-wearing gurus? Will the RS get easier with practice? Or are some people just not ever going to fall in love with it?
