@jennlin821: we supply the spa slippers for our guests. You can get them relatively cheap on Amazon.
I specifically ask people to take off the shoes because that's the rule in our home otherwise you track so much dirt in.

This is super interesting. I live in the suburbs outside NYC and its totally normal to keep your shoes on in the house here. When I'm at home I take them off pretty quickly, but it almost seems rude to take them off unprompted at someone else's house. Like you are making yourself a little too comfortable and right at home at their house. I'd be put off if someone I didnt know well came over and took their shoes off right away.

I actually prefer having my shoes off for comfort, but I know next week when I'm at my parents house and in-laws house on Christmas I will probably be the only one who takes their shoes off!

@lady baltimore: I usually think about the grossest places shoes go- public restrooms. Dogs generally aren’t in them, though I agree they are certainly tracking dirt in.

I grew up in NJ and my parents kept shoes on. As kids we would start off with shoes on then remove them somewhere in the house and spent ten minutes scrambling looking for them in the morning before school. My parents still wear shoes in the house and my dad is constantly tracking dirt onto the carpet and my mom is always complaining about it (but that’s also a symptom of my dad being oblivious and not wiping his feet).

As an adult I’ve generally preferred shoes off, because it’s cleaner, and then my shoes remain in one neat place by the door instead of searching in the morning. But once we had babies we got a lot more diligent about it because the kids are on the floor, crawling, putting hands in mouth. I live in MA and yes, we also have a lot of bad weather, so it’s extra necessary for 6 months out of the year but we generally do it year round. Our wood floors are super scratched up from the previous owners wearing shoes too.

But during nicer weather I don’t get upset about shoes, now that my kids are older and not putting things in their mouth and stuff. My friend who is always cold always brings slippers but most people just wear socks. She has foot problems now so purchased an extra pair of supportive sneakers to be indoor sneakers.

@Becky: We clean our dog's feet when it is wet, too, but it seems that no-shoes-in-the-house people remove their shoes regardless of the weather. I just don't buy that pets aren't tracking in the same dry-weather germs that shoes would be. I fully support everyone setting whatever policies work for their household, but that reasoning never made sense to me for pet-friendly homes.

we are in canada too, and also asian, so that's a double whammy of non-shoe wearing indoors :).

my older asian relatives will request slippers or bring their own (mostly for warmth and foot support), but myself and everyone else just goes barefoot or socks :).

i think it's neat how this is one of those north american things that can be so different depending on where you live. also, i would find it super confusing if i lived in one those locations where both shoes on/shoes off are common! lol

We take shoes off, but aren't as strict about it as when we had crawling babies. We're in NYC, so the bottoms of our shoes are probably super gross. But these days I'll keep my shoes on if I need to run to the bedroom to grab something on my way out, things like that. And often the kids are well into the apartment by the time they finally acknowledge our fifth "take your shoes off!". Visitors do take their shoes off when they come in, though.

We are a shoes off house. If someone is just coming over for a party, I don't ask them to take off their shoes even though it is very obvious we are shoe free (hence the rack of shoes by the door). If someone is staying with us for any length of time, we do try to enforce the no shoes policy. No one ignores it except my in laws, of course. I cringe internally when someone wears shoes in my house.

no shoes in the house, but maybe for a holiday party I would make an exception (in theory--in reality we live in a small place so we don't have parties, just small get-togethers and people do take off their shoes).

I grew up in the south in a shoes-on house, but now I live in the NYC area and we don't allow shoes in the house. I think my friend group is evenly mixed between shoes-on and shoes-off, but no one has an issue taking off their shoes at our house.

@msredbeansandrice: You brought up what I was thinking! Do none of y'all have dogs? 'Cause even if I wanted to have a no shoes household (which I don't, for a variety of reasons), we have a dog who is tracking in all of the outside germs anyway.

The first time I was ever asked to take my shoes off in someone's house, we were staying the weekend with friends of my now husband's. They had three dogs and a number of cats, and I was always stepping on bits of cat litter and dirt tracked in my the dogs with my bare feet, or just having the bottoms of my feet caked in fur. *That* grossed me out.

@Mamatimes3: You aren't alone! I live in California and 95% of the houses I go to, the host is wearing their shoes, so I keep mine on. I always ask and they are like "no, keep them on!" Like, it would be weirder for me to come with my own slippers or be barefooted on their floors than to just wear my shoes. I ask my husband and son to take their shoes off soon after entering the house, but sometimes I forget.

@Mamatimes3: I grew up in MA and we always wore shoes in the house, so I didn’t think twice about it until I was living in NYC with a baby and our nanny (who grew up never wearing shoes in the house) kindly pointed out how disgusting it was to track whatever grossness is on the NYC sidewalks and subways into the house and all over the floor that my infant was crawling on, and then stuffing her subway contaminated hands into her mouth. We’ve never worn shoes in the house again! And even now, in the NYC suburbs, no one I know with small kids allows shoes to be worn in their house.

Where is everyone from? Because I have never in my whole life taken my shoes off at someone’s house when I enter. I live in southern Louisiana so snow is not an issue. I wouldn’t be opposed to do it at someone’s house but I would need the heads up to bring socks. The thought of walking barefoot on floors that are not my own freaks me out.

Is this a cultural thing also?

We ask guests (unless it's a birthday party where people are all over the place) to take their shoes off. My dad always ignores us and it really bothers me. He left dog shit on our floor and dirt on the carpeted stairs. And then didn't even notice he did it so I cleaned it up! He got mad at me for telling him AGAIN to take his shoes off and didn't say goodbye to me last time he left our house.

Thanks everyone for chiming in!

Sounds like we will be a shoes on for holiday family, no shoes the rest of the time. Most of my family has foot issues, so we wear supportive-hard sole slippers or indoor sneakers inside all the time (never actually barefoot).

For Christmas, we dress up. So the thought of getting all dolled up, wearing my special outfit and jewelry and then putting on crocs.... doesn't work for me. So I will be wearing heels, however not during cooking and my heels are only worn indoors at my office.
I live in Maine, so I wear different shoes to and from work and put the heels on only in the office. (flats to the office in the summer and boots in the winter)

I have been thinking about getting slipper socks to have for guests, because our house and floor are cold & slippery. Most people bring slippers, but I'd like to have extras for drop-ins and other times. And then I can throw them in the washing machine, and no one will be grossed out wearing 'community slippers'.

Idk, just another perspective- I've never been asked to take my shoes off at someone's house, and tbh I'd find it super weird if I went to a Christmas party and I was asked to take off my shoes, especially in cold weather...

Just another vote for politely asking people to take their shoes off! It grosses me out thinking of wearing shoes inside (sooo many gross germs—don’t google it)—it’s not just tracking dirt in, its like you can literally carry strep on the bottom of your shoes. It’s winter November-April here and it’s really common for people to bring slippers to wear. All the kids I’ve been around also know to take their shoes off when they go inside (it helps that it’s winter half the year and clearly you can’t wear boots inside).

In the summer if we’re going to be outside and for some reason people come in our front door rather than just go around back I’m fine with them wearing their shoes through to the back door. In my experience most people are ok with that.

@Jennibenni: Yeah people bring socks if they are in flip flops , heels etc. But we don’t have that weather too often sadly so they are usually wearing socks
