I wouldn't send a check in $ because they will lose a lot of money when they try to deposit it (bank fees, exchange rate). If you want to send a monetary gift, I would consider doing it by PayPal because that can convert immediately to euros and there is little to no loss, or possibly an Amazon gift card.
