We had people give us some "interesting" gifts (or no gifts at all) and we were still grateful for their thought and effort and thankful that they came to celebrate with us. Although, I must say that in those types of situations, they were SO out of line with their comments that he was probably so pissed off and would say anything to be hurtful.
