No way to both. We refuse to even celebrate extended family birthdays on a weekday. They are welcome to celebrate without us or celebrate on the weekend. With two FT WOH parents and a kid that has to wake up early for daycare, we need to stick to our routines.

No I wouldn't throw a party on a school night for kids. And I wouldn't go to one either. We have said no to many parties this year due to awkward timing. With 3 children its really hard to balance events that are not considerate of things like a decent bed time and school early the next morning

I would attend one, but not throw one myself. Even if it is an outside venue, it feels like it would still be a lot of work? LOL

I voted that I would attend a weekday party. Since I would have known in advance, DH & I would make ourselves available to take one LO there while the other one stays home (or ask grandma to). As long as this doesn't happen a lot, we would be able to make it work. I totally understand why parents might want to go this route to save $; I would just hope they have realistic expectations that not all parents would be able to make it work. Then again, weekends are busy for a lot of families too with family obligations, classes, etc.

I personally would NOT throw a weekday party. Just because we have the flexibility with our work schedules when need be, doesn't mean I would want to make a full regular work week even MORE stressful by adding a party! If I do a weekday party I'd probably end up taking the day off!

I'm not opposed to the idea, but I know it would be really hard for working parents to make that work.

When I coached my kid's cheer team, parents begged me to start practice no earlier than 630 because by the time the commute, pickup, and running home to change clothes/let the dog out, it is already pushing 7.

Trying to make a party that starts at 5 means leaving work at like 3/330, and very few employers end the work day at that time.

I voted both would and would not attend a weekday party lol. It highly depends on many variables: If the schedule works, timing works, location works, and if I am even remotely close to the people who invites us. I would only attend if all stars align and definitely one in a million years.

Definitely not throwing one on weekdays though myself. I do not hate myself enough to stress myself over a weekday to a party that (more than) half of the people we invited won't come.

Hard pass. We don't get home until 5:45 and there's no way I would take off work to make it to a birthday party during the week. I'm already having to deal with soccer practice at 6 pm one night a week and that's a struggle.

Thought never occurred to me to have a weeknight party at the same time there are lots of events people make time for that happen during the week. In the scenario you described @DesertDreams88: where all I had to do was show up I might be game for it. I like it when birthday parties are on the actual birthday and this would make that possible. There’s an indoor play space that’s a couple miles from preschool and also close to a grocery store (cake & dinner at the ready) that this could totally work for us especially since most of LO’s invites guests would be coming from his preschool. Depending on what time their parents usually pick them up it might turn out to be more of an open-house type affair. I like it though!

Didn’t vote because I could see myself both throwing a weekday party and attending one as long as it ended by 7 pm.

I wouldn’t throw one. I might attend one if it worked with our schedule- we have activities several evenings a week and my kids are still young! And like others mentioned I have a younger daughter so I would have to bring her or leave her home. DH works from home so that wouldn’t be impossible, depending on the day, but not ideal. Plus my kid tends to get pretty wound up. So I might attend one but I’d think hard about it.

Oh- and I stay at home and my daughter is only in half day preK. I can only imagine it will only get harder from here.

No we couldn’t do that. It’s just too crazy during the week with two full time jobs school and pets. Plus LO is a royal nightmare after 8 hours at daycare! Sat or Sun morning parties for the win.

Most kids aren't picked up from daycare in my neighborhood until 530/6. Getting to any venue before 6 would be near impossible. We would struggle because we'd need to walk through dog and if siblings weren't invited I'd have to get a sitter.

We were invited to one about a year ago. I had to take vacation to get my kid to the place. It was fine, but cake at 7 causes a huge sugar high and a late bedtime

It would be tough - I don’t get all the pickups done and home until about 5:15. I could move that up, but I’d have to bring my other kid because my husband doesn’t get home until 5:45.

Our school district has early dismissal on Wednesdays, and I’ve thought about taking DD and a couple of her close friends to afternoon tea at a fancy hotel as her birthday party when she’s a bit older. I would have to take a half-day off work, but that would be okay. I don’t think I’d throw a bigger or later party on a weeknight and if DD was invited to one, we’d try to go but I could see it being tricky to get there.

We wouldn’t throw one because we’d have to take off work to be there on time. We probably wouldn’t attend one for the same reasons... that and we have extra curriculars several nights a week. I think most working parents would struggle to get their child somewhere by 5.

I wouldn’t throw one because I know it would be hard for a lot of people to make it, unless it was a small invite list of sahms and all their children (or something like that).

But.. if all my kids were allowed to attend I would definitely go to a weeknight party. I can imagine it being harder later though because I would like to start putting them in weekday evening extracurriculars as they get older. My oldest just turned 5.

I think it sounds great. We’ve had weekends with multiple parties and it would be nice to free up some of that time. We have had just 1 party that was 5-7pm on a Saturday and rather than winding our kids up it pooped them out entirely and they fell right asleep at home. I’d take that timeframe again happily

I would not throw one, bc DH would not be able to attend.

I'd attend a weekday party, but probably not in the time frame you mentioned - I have two other children who most likely wouldn't be invited, and wouldn't be able to hire a sitter if I needed to stay. I'd also worry about the kid being too wound up and it disrupting sleep. I'd be more willing to do a morning or afternoon party (for a half day preschooler/kindergartener), assuming we didn't have any activities scheduled and I could be finished by the time I had to pick up older siblings from school.

I do think you'll wind up with fewer attendees due to sports and activities, but maybe that's a good thing! :)

Nope. My kids are usually so wound up after a birthday party there is no way I would attend one during the week during the school year. During a break or summer I might consider it.

We do have baseball during the week but practices and games wear him out so he still goes to bed pretty easily.

Last night I went to a party at a local equivalent of Chuck E Cheese, 5-7pm, for a 6-year old. It was pretty laid back and relaxed. When I mentioned it to a friend, they were like, "Who the heck throws parties on weekdays?" and I replied that it's always cheaper that way, so maybe the mom was trying to save money and have a little celebration mid-week.

What do you think? Would you ever throw a weekday party if it was at a venue that did all the "work" for you? Have you ever attended one? Or would you not like the idea?

For me, I get out of work at 4pm and it was 2 min away from my house, so it worked out fine for me. I liked the break from the norm.
