@Chillybear: half a pound in two weeks is pretty good! My LO gains about 3/4 lb a month (on fortified BM, formula, and WCM depending on his age at time).

I'm so sorry this is worrying you! We had the same weight history with DD where she dropped in percentile - from 50% when she was discharged to 5% around 6 months. She was developing on track otherwise, with height and head circumference staying mostly on track, so our pediatrician didn't have us change anything. We made sure she had enough BM to drink and made enough wet/poop diapers. DD has stayed in the 5-10% range for weight since but developing perfectly otherwise. Since our ped was not worried I just kept at it. Maybe you can speak with an LC and see if maybe January was just an off month and things will level out?

@Kemma: thanks for your support... Outside of the 4 bottles at daycare we typically feed 2-3 times in the evening at least once over night and twice in the morning usually 5-6am and again a top off right before we get in the car.

@Mrs. Twine: other than when she was sick with the stomach bug her diapers are wet at least every 2 hours

I had been concerned since i started back at work because all of her care givers (grandma and the daycare ladies) mentioned that she seems to want more at each feeding. We upped the bottles from 3 to 3 1/2 but i'm not producing that much with the pump. Some days she drinks 14+ oz other days she only takes 3 bottles at day care or they send me home with a couple of oz that end up getting thrown away or shes not as interested in nursing that evening.... So i was not 100% convinced that more was the way to go but if she's not gaining as much as she should maybe she does need those extra ounces and they'll need to come from the formula.

So the take away from last nights visit was to keep doing what were doing - four 3.5-4oz bottles for daycare and nurse on demand at home and see what happens at the 6 month check up in 6 weeks

I really agree with @Kemma: ; it sounds like the weight, in isolation, maybe isn't something to get too worried over. I'd say if she seems happy/otherwise healthy and has good diaper output she is most likely getting enough. It's never a bad idea to see an LC if you have questions or concerns. Also, different doctors are so different, and it doesn't really make one right and the other wrong. In a case like this where baby IS gaining but may be dropping down on the curve somewhat, a ped may or may not push supplementation. I know Lorelei was quite tiny for most of infancy, but had good diaper output and was meeting milestones/alert/etc. and so her doctor just said that since neither myself nor Mr. T were particularly big people that that was just probably where she was supposed to be and not to stress over it.

@Chillybear: I'm sorry that you and your wee one are having a rough time at the moment, this motherhood business is stressful!

The fact that your LO also dropped down in height percentiles kind of suggests to me that she's just a wee babe and she's "catching down" to her natural size. A gain of 1/2 lb in two weeks sounds pretty good to me too! And I think it's worth remembering that smaller gains on one or two occasions doesn't really indicate a problem unless there are other concerns with output or development. If your LO continued to have a series of lower gains might be worth checking out but if you're otherwise satisfied, then I'm sure you're ok!

The only other question I have is how many nursing sessions do you have outside of work and on weekend days? Does your LO STTN or are you doing night feeds? I know night waking can be sucky but it can also be a great way to maintain / boost supply and get extra calories into a baby.

@jetsa: I feel famous!

@jetsa: thanks it was a better appt than I expected

@purrpletulips: she also dropped from 50th to 25th percentile in height at the 4 month appt. they didn't measure her height today

@Mrs. Blue: I really liked the lactation consultants I saw in the fall and even though they don't take my insurance I think I might look into the out of pocket cost to make an appt. they paired up with my peds office

So when I picked Fi up at day care, they told me she only ate 2 of her 4 bottles for the day and she felt really warm to me. When we got to the dr office she weighed in at 12lbs 10oz so she gained 1/2lb in a little over 2 weeks. She also had a 100.6 fever. The doctor we had was great and her advice was to wait until the 6 month appt to really get concerned about and at this point to keep doing what we're doing. I mentioned that I used up my freezer stash and she gave me two cans of gentlease her suggestion was to send three 4oz breast milk bottles and one of formula. I need to have a conversation with our day care and I'm going to call the LC about my drop in supply when our house got the stomach flu

The same exact thing happened to us--Lo dropped from 40th Percentile at 2 months to 25th percentile at 4 months. I tried to up nursing sessions, but at 5 months, he had dropped to 15th percentile, or around there. The pedi said I could either supplement or start solids, so I started solids. I also added in a supplemental bottle of breastmilk before bed, after I nursed him.

He stayed under the 20th percentile from that point on though--at 15 months, he was 12th percentile. He is just tall and thin, liek DH and I. It's his body type and that's ok! As long as your LO is getting enough oz (which you can judge from doing multiple weight checks with an LC) and he's otherwise happy or healthy, I wouldn't let anyone pressure you into supplementing or thinking that anything is wrong!

I"m sorry! It's so stressful to worry about weight/eating issues. I hope all is much better at this check-up, though!

I have a couple of thoughts on the specifics you addressed:
Pumping is never as efficient as a baby, so I think it's pretty common to have a hard time keeping up with baby's needs when you're at work pumping v. at home feeding the baby directly. Can you add a pumping session at night or somewhere else in the day?

Does the hospital you delivered at have lactation consultants? Ours had LCs that you could keep contacting even after you took your baby home.

I really hope everything turns out great and you don't need to change anything, but I just wanted to say I had so much guilt about supplementing with formula for the boys and eventually having to use formula exclusively, but they're almost a year old and they're happy, healthy boys. Like I said, I hope BFing will keep working for you, but I just wanted to be one voice that says if it doesn't, don't beat yourself up over it. It will be just fine and LO will do great! There are so many different formulas and while it's a transition, sometimes it turns out to be a really great thing.

Good luck!

Good luck, I know they don't typically check height at a weight check but do you think your LO has grown in height? DD consistently went down on the weight charts (although she was still gaining) but grew 1" every month her first year.

@Chillybear: I would say it is worth it because you may not need to supplement. Breast fed babies grow differently than formula fed babies and around 4 months seems to be one of the times they slow growing. So talking to someone who has education in that and can give you information is good. My pediatrician didn't know much about breastfeeding and breastfed babies.

Of course I'm coming from my experience as a frame of reference. But 25% isn't a lot of weight loss. If it was me I would probably hold out another month to see if he is still tracking on the new curve.

You can also look at the who charts for breastfed babies.

1. support mama it will be ok, you can still ebf at home even if you supplement formula at daycare.
2. I believe @Kemma pointed out on a thread here that baby's normally drop to their percentage curve between 4-6 months so its not necessarily a problem.
3. it sounds like January was just a bad month and not something that you or the dr should disregard.
4. I don't pump enough at work either J (also a sept baby) takes 15 oz and I pump 12-13. I was adding in an extra pumping session a day to get the ounces but lately have been just supplementing with my stash. I've also read this but I don't really know that it's true bc pump doesn't empty the boob like baby: http://www.workandpump.com/freezerstash.htm

@brownie: wow what helped you when that happened? In 2013 i had aetna which was wonderful and cover LC visits I went twice once in Oct to do a weighted feed and learn how to use my pump and once in Dec to get plan for going back to work. In Jan my insurance changed and they dont cover visits to this LC so i havent been able to go back. But it is on my list of questions to ask if it would be worth it and what they would help me with.

A little background Fi was born in Sept and weighed 7lbs 12oz we decided to breastfeed and i had a nice 3 month maternity leave. at 1 month she weighed 9lbs 6oz, at 2 months 10lbs 8ozs around 3 weeks later (LC weighed her) 11lbs 7oz at her 4 month appt she weighed in at 12lbs 1oz. and she dropped off her percentile track (50th to 25th) and the Dr is having us come back tonight for a weight check. As the day goes on i'm getting more and more nervous.

When we went in for the 4 month appt, she was starting to get a stomach bug and had been puking up most of the day at daycare. January was a tough month in general Fi transitioned to daycare, started teething, spent 2-3 weeks with a head cold and congestion and then this stomach bug.

I had been sending 12 oz of breastmilk to daycare (four 3oz bottles) for 9-10 hours and feeding her right before we left and right when we got home. Doc recommended upping her bottles to 3.5-4oz each and I'm not keeping up pumping wise i get 10-12/day in 3-4 sessions. I've burned through all but 6oz in my freezer.

I have a feeling they're going to tell me that i'll need to start supplementing with formula when i go in today. And while i have no issue if thats what my baby needs it just seems so overwhelming - finding a formula that doesnt upset her stomach, she doesnt take bottles at all from me. I want to continue our nursing relationship but i'm afraid my supply will tank once we introduce formula. Why was nursing enough when i was home with her but now pumped milk is not enough?

Has anyone else gone through this and can offer me support, wisdom from the other side?
