Repeat to yourself "I am growing a healthy baby and my body was made to do this." It is scary to see those numbers go up, but it is totally and completely normal and healthy. Also remember that much of that weight is NOT fat, it is all the support the baby needs (placenta, amniotic fluid, your own blood supply, fluid retention, etc. in addition to the baby itself).

I gained 29lbs with my first pregnancy. I ate well, was very active until the end, and I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight by 6 weeks pp.

I'm 25 weeks with my second and have gained more weight more quickly, but I know it is just my body doing what it needs to do to produce a healthy baby. I am eating and doing what I need to do to remain healthy for me and the baby.

sounds like you're eating right and exercising, so your body's just doing what it needs to do! i understand the anxiety about weight though. i asked my doctor not to tell me my weight unless i was gaining too much or too little (neither of those happened), and i made a point of looking away when the nurse weighed me at the start of my appointments. i knew i would obsess otherwise. i still don't know how much weight i gained during my pregnancy--it truly is blissful ignorance.

It sounds like you're doing everything right! I don't weigh myself at home (only when I go to see my midwife), so that jump each month is weird, but I know I'm taking care of myself, and my body is gaining as it needs to.

I started prenatal yoga at 20 weeks ... I figured, it's going to help with birth, and it's an activity to help keep me in shape (win, win).

Don't worry about the numbers ... just keep eating well, and moving for that baby! :)

I delivered at 37 weeks, and at my last appointment I had gained 24 pounds. During my pregnancy I took spin classes twice a week (which was awesome and low impact), jogged & walked & lifted weights three times a week at the gym. The more active I was, the better I felt and more energy I had. Although I "tried" to eat healthy, I was a sucker for sweets. I think I could have gained even less had I not had so many treats. Although at almost five months postpartum, I still have about 12 left to lose even with eating cleaner than I ever have and exercising hard 5-6 times a week.

@MCD919: it sounds like you're doing what you need to do in order to stay fit during pregnancy (if that's even an option)

I was like you during my first pregnancy. I worked out 3-5 days/week, I ate healthy and really tried to keep the scale under control. But, I still gained 37 lbs. I'm on my 2nd pregnancy and I'm 11 weeks and I've already gained 7 lbs, which is close to how much I gained around this time w/ DD (granted, I can't workout so far this pregnancy because I feel like I'm going to puke if I do any sort of activity).

Just know that, as tough as it is to see the scale go up, your body will gain what it needs. And, if you continue doing what you're doing, it will come off. It took me 7 months to lose the weight with DD.

@MCD919: FWIW I'm also petite, 5'5" about 118 lbs. I gained about 40-45 lbs through my pregnancy but no one could tell. And my OB never made a big deal about .They never told me how much I gained between visits if I didn't ask. So you could ask your OB to do that if you're worried you will obsess?

@evansjamie: @MrsTiz: I think 'body will do what's best for baby' is a good mentality to have. I have to remember that our bodies were made to do this... hiding the scale is probably a good idea, too

@futuremama: @LovelyPlum: The 1st tri is tough! I only had mild nausea, but I was definitely reaching more for carbs than usual... whatever gets us through I guess!

I'm 9w2d today, and this has been hard for me, too! I really want to be ok with letting my body do what it will, but it's super hard. I still am having a hard time with watching the numbers on the scale go up, and it is exacerbated by my constant eating of carbs to keep the morning sickness at bay. I'm hoping that it will be easier when the nausea calms down. I'm up about 5 pounds since I got pregnant, and I asked the nurse about it yesterday, because I was concerned about getting a lecture. She told me not to worry about it, and rather concentrate on eating a lot of the good stuff (fruit, veggies), and portion controlling the not so healthy stuff. DH also took the scale away from me, though I still probably look once a week (better than once a day!).

Hang in there. We'll get through this.

I'm struggling with this. I'm only 11 weeks but used to eating a fairly healthy and well-balanced diet. With all of the nausea and food aversions, my diet has suffered quite a bit over the past few months. Now that things are settling down symptom-wise, it'll be nice to get back into my routine. This is probably something that will continue to bother me since I've always been thin, but my husband has been really supportive and telling me how beautiful I am with my little pooch. It's going to be tough to keep up with exercise in the winter though.

I'm in the "let your body decide" camp..so if you are eating properly and working out, there isn't much else you can do!

I'm eating the exact same way I was pre pregnancy, and actually walking more than I used to, and i'm up 25lb at 31 weeks, and your supposed to gain a bunch more weight the last few months, so there's no way I fit into the recommended 25lb total gain category. Don't worry about it, 10lb doesn't sound like much at all to be halfway done!

I'm 36 weeks and up about 25 pounds. Honestly, the number on the scale doesn't bother me very much. I'm gaining this weight to grow my little girl, and thinking about that makes it easier for me to not obsess. That, and I fired my home scale so I wouldn't worry about it, so all I get is my weight at the midwife's office. Another thing that helped me was to remember that if my midwife wasn't concerned, then I shouldn't be concerned. At one point, I was losing weight when I first got my GD diagnosis and switched my diet. I lost around 10 pounds in a few weeks, but I've gained it back appropriately.

Yet another post about weight gain in pregnancy..... I know there are a few threads on this topic, but I guess I'm just looking for advice/ experiences of others who've been through it or are currently struggling with body changes. I've always been on the petite side and I'm having a hard time seeing the numbers go up and up. I know it's part of pregnancy, and I'm soo very grateful to be pregnant after 2 losses. It's just weird to see the numbers rise with little control :/ I'm up about 10lbs at 20 weeks. I walk/ use the elliptical about 4x per week and eat pretty healthy (whole foods, little processed stuff *try* to resist cravings). How did you stay fit during pregnancy??
