Follow up... My clinic used to only use one type of chart but apparently WHO has a guideline specifically for breastfed babes which is a bit lower in weight growth than formula babes. Wonder which type of chartig your clinic uses

I don't quite have any wise advice, but I went through something like this too and wanted to share our experience...

Our chart was crazy too. We went from one point he was 90% at 2 months, to something like 15% or less at 9 months. I was going crazy and my husband was stressing me out. Our pediatricians weren't extremely concerned (and multiple of them kept telling us we are not big people ourselves, so it is "logical" for the drop), but it was very nerve-wrecking as a first time parent. All I know is he wasn't very interested in eating (breastmilk or solids) at all after 3-4 months. We seldom met the daily requirement of however many oz of breastmilk/formula a day. We went to a GT specialist and did a bunch of tests, worrying something is up with his digestive system...etc. We worked with a nutritionist to up the calories on his food by adding olive oil in purees and additional formula powder in breastmilk bottles...etc. We were on special acid reflux meds. We only worked with the specialists between 9 months to 1+ years old.... because at one point, it was exhausting to worry about something that isn't really a problem.... when LO was growing just fine.

Looking back, honestly there was nothing to be concerned about. LO is 2.5 years old now and he just continued to grow up as a very healthy, happy child. Back then, so many pediatricians kept trying to convince me that LO was "finding his own path on the chart". It was nerve wrecking to see the crazy continuous drop when being mapped to the "official chart". And I am really angry with whoever that actually comes up with that stupid chart! How could they tell us how a child suppose to be at each month when every child is so different. It is like oh there is not enough thing for you to worry about let me map you to a "standard" chart. I hope your case is similar too that there is nothing to worry about!

@Arden: WHO chart! His pediatrician and I both take the percentiles with a grain of salt (he's a breastfeeding fanatic haha) but he still wants us to increase his intake just in case. I'm sending DH out today to get some grass fed butter and coconut oil for his food today. Plus whenever I question myself, "Should I breastfeed him real quick?" I always just say "Yes". Lol

Is this the AAP chart or the WHO chart? Breastfed babies tend to have a slower growth curve than the AAP chart which is based on a higher percentage of formula fed babies.

The fact that he was sick enough to be hospitalized seems like a completely reasonable explanation for weight loss and I'm sure he'll catch up soon. I would feed him things like avocado, egg yolk, coconut oil, and grass fed butter if you are worried about his fat intake. I give Vi coconut oil in a medicine dropper and she likes it! :)

@Applesandbananas: Thank you! I'm definitely not a formula shamer or afraid to give my son formula if I have to...it's just more of a "Why wasn't I good enough?" thing. I know what you mean. :(
I may add in a nighttime pumping session after he goes to bed to maybe be able to add a little more to his bottles.

You've gotten wonderful advice from others but I just wanted to throw in another "you're doing great, don't worry!" :) I think we added another purée at 6 months, so you could definitely try that or a pat of butter/coconut oil or more avocado.

I also had a dip in supply around 6-7 months so I added a pump session at home after LO went to sleep to relieve some of the stress of trying to get 12oz every day at work. And honestly, if you have to supplement, it'll be okay! I promise! We did and I credit supplementing with saving our breastfeeding relationship! Formula isn't bad, though I completely understand where you're coming from and I had those same feelings, but ultimately that was a good decision for us.

At around 6 months DS got really sick (after having been sick for weeks) with pneumonia. His weight took a total nosedive, which you can see in the attached growth chart. He's now 9 months, eats 3 solids meals a day and is back on his curve. I wouldn't worry about supplementing at this point, I'd just start feeding more solids meals with healthy fats.

@Danizaur: What did the ped suggest? I would think at 6 months you would be better off adding more solids, than supplementing with formula, since he will start needing more solids anyway, right? Maybe add some really high fat solids like avocado, whole milk yogurt, etc?

@avivoca: He mentioned that too. He's not overly concerned, but he definitely wants to keep an eye on it. I'm going over what more we can do in our head for feeding, but we sent two purees once but then he didn't even take his second bottle so we went back to one. His ped advised me to nurse him when he was fussy, just in case he was hungry. Which I don't mind. We will just pop the boob in all day!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: Right. We nurse on demand and he eats his whole purée...what more can I do? The coconut oil sounds interesting! Like @oliviaoblivia: mentioned too. We will look into that. My ped is very pro breastfeeding and he seems very well aware that breastfed babies gain slower. Im glad he does and hasn't pushed yet.

My baby was FF, so take it with a grain of salt, but her growth did dramatically slow after 6 months. She gained 10.5lbs in the first 6 months and only 3lbs from 6 to 12 months. I honestly think it's fairly normal..... However, if your doctor is concerned then I would listen to their advice. They are the doctor, not me. Also, c never dropped off her growth chart. Her curve was the same all the way through.

@Danizaur: It's hard not to worry - but I would think that since he was sick and is becoming more mobile, it's totally normal to dip in weight gain.
J was the same - it's always been tough to get him to gain weight. And he's a picky eater. I kind of give him a pass if he wants to eats extra crackers or another yogurt, I know he could use the calories.

@Danizaur: My DD has dropped consistently in the charts as well. She was in the 80s when she was born and at her 6 month check 2 weeks ago, she was 14% for weight and 7% for height. :(

My pedi said her size was "ok", meaning it wasn't horrible, but not great either. She told me to do high calorie foods, like meat, eggs, and avocado. I also asked her about adding coconut oil to her purees and she said that was fine. My DD is mspi, so we are going to test out butter and milk soon, so hopefully she will be able to tolerate the dairy and I can add butter and heavy cream to some things.

It's SO hard not to worry! I try to just repeat to myself that breastfed babies are slower to grow and the pedi wasn't concerned (And my pedi is a type to be extra cautious about things, so we can catch something early if something is wrong). Also, my DD is having plenty of wet diapers and is happy after breastfeeding and eating her puree. I let her nurse for as long as she wants and eat as much puree until she becomes disinterested. It's all I can do! I'm hoping that the coconut oil will help.

Good luck to you and T! *hugs*

@Danizaur: If he's happy with 10 oz, then definitely stick with that! In general, breastfed babies don't usually increase the amount of milk they take as they get older because your milk just gets fattier in order to compensate. Maybe try adding another puree if you're concerned and see if he'll eat it? But if he won't and he's not acting hungry, I really don't think you need to be too concerned. Some babies are just smaller than others! But I know it's hard not to worry - I went through the same thing with Xander. Those first few months were so stressful and I was pumping all the time to provide Xander with 15 oz during the day that I'm sure he didn't even need. I got so much pressure from others to introduce solids early or to give him formula just because his percentiles were going down, but it's soooooooooo normal. <3 <3 <3

I remember you were worried about this with his 4 mo appt and the doc said that breastfed babies are just sometimes a little smaller. It sounds like they are keeping an eye on it so I would try not to worry-- but I know that is hard!

Honestly I'd look at 3 things: Is he happy? Is he having wet diapers? Is his doctor recommending intervention?

If yes, yes, no... I'd try not to worry.

With all of our feeding issues I've spent a lot of time worrying about how much fiona eats and one thing that I've realized is that babies are more resilient than we give them credit for. Worst case scenario-- he continues to decline in % and they want you to supplement (or maybe just start giving him some more high-calorie purees or maybe adding some rice cereal to his bottles to increase calories). That won't mean he is in any actual danger. If he's having wet diapers and he's happy, he's not starving or dehydrated. There is no long term danger here. You're keeping your eye on it and will do whatever is needed for long-term growth. You're a good mom <3

My LO was EBF and she steadily dropped in the % until around 9 months and now it's pretty consistent. At her 3 week appt she was in the 80th % and now she steadily hovers around 35-40% for weight.

Given his hospital stay it seems expected that he would've dropped a bit in percentiles. I agree with PP about introducing more solids and healthy fats. If he'll eat avocado that's a great source of healthy fat.

My daughter's weight slid a little bit at her six month appointment too. She had has a cold and had started crawling, so her calorie needs were very high.

Our ped had me introduce more solids and continue nursing. We added healthy fats to her solids too. Purees don't have too many calories on their own, but a touch of butter or coconut oil to sweet potatoes can boost their impact.

She was back on track at her nine month.

Xander's weight percentile dropped steadily from when he was born to 6 months before it settled out. He went from the 75th percentile in weight down to the 13th around 6 months. And we hadn't even started introducing solids yet, so it was all breast milk.

From what I understand, it's completely normal to drop in percentiles, especially in breastfed babies. I think it's around 6 months that they settle into their true percentile. So the test will be from here on out seeing what his weight does.

That being said, will he only drink 10 oz of breast milk at daycare? Could you try sending a little more? Xander drank around 15 oz for 10 hours a day at daycare, which is definitely on the higher end of things, but maybe adding a little more might help? If he won't drink that much or you can't produce that much to send, maybe just try adding another puree?

But really, try not to worry about it. I think it sounds like he's okay and like you said, you guys were in the hospital, which I'm sure affected things. Hopefully he'll be holding steady at his next checkup in 6 weeks! <3

M has his 4 month today (even though he's almost 5) and I worry about this. He was low at 2 months and they said how it goes this time. He's growing. has rolls and is starting to outgrow 6 month clothes. I'm not sure where doctors want babies to be. They can't all be the same.
