@PixieStix: I gained 50 with my first, starting at 108, so it was pretty significant, but I lost it all in 9 months with exercise.
I was very hard on myself the whole time.
Knowing that I could lose it made it easier to be good to myself the next time around.

your body knows what it is doing, and you know what you are doing, too. You will figure it out. Don't worry.

Also, air popped popcorn is great for boredom eating--low cal and super filling.

I just had my second in November. With my first, I ate well and worked out and despite crazy swelling only gained 30 pounds. With my second I was up 40+ pounds with much less swelling. I had crazy sugar cravings toward the end and one of the ob's at my practice commented I was up more than they wanted to see. I'm now almost 5 months postpartum and am back to my pre-pregnancy weight and all I've done is breastfeeding and return to my pre-pregnancy habits (which is easier now minus those cravings). I wish I'd been a little gentler on myself. I was growing a tiny human and my body was doing great things. Admittedly, the pregnancy weight took a bit longer to shed this time but it all came off in the end. Like the others have said, I would treat each day as a new day to make good choices and if you mess up, then just take it in stride and focus on making good choices from then on.

@PixieStix: Awww...dont be so hard on yourself! You obviously don't need to go on a diet or anything but maybe look into mindful/intuitive eating. It's basically about following your hunger cues and eating/or not eating when you need to.

@PixieStix: Give yourself some grace! The fact that you are concerned means that you will make good/ healthy choices for yourself and baby going forward. I had this issue with both of my pregnancies- with DD1 I indulged in every single craving for late night cookies and gained 50 lbs and felt awful about myself. With DD2, I was much more conscious and ate very healthy plus I was chasing a toddler and trying to walk often and I still gained 40 lbs. I had 2 big babies- 8lbs 12 oz and 9 lbs 6 oz so that definitely contributed to it and I carried the weight pretty well. Being pregnant is tough enough without beating yourself up over weight gain, which is a temporary issue and can be easily fixed after delivery.

As far as the ice cream goes- try 100% juice fruit popsicles or pieces of frozen mango. I found that smoothies weren't frozen enough to make them seem like ice cream for me!

I was like you (working out really consistently before getting pregnant), and then because of a wicked 1st trimester (and some of my 2nd). I've worked out maybe 3 times in 5 months. Ugh.

With that said, I've been really conscious of walking when I can, making good food choices (now that I can eat more than carbs), and trying not to give into cravings (eating frozen mango instead of ice cream). It's been hard. Like others have said, just try to take it one day at a time and do better when you can.

The weight gain thing is just a general marker. Everyone is different. My midwives waited to shame me last time until after I delivered, lol. My 65 year old midwife was like, "We don't generally use BMI as a marker, but this says your obese, so you need to lose 15 pounds." ;)

I didn't read all the responses but I wanted to let you know that I'm in the same boat. I'm 35lbs up at 30 weeks. And I have zero swelling so I know it's just my diet. This time around I'm on diclegis for morning sickness and it helps somewhat but I was still needing to eat constantly to keep the nausea manageable.

Since my MS is finally cooling down I've been counting calories. It's been about three weeks now and it's helped me a lot. But I lost a significant amount of weight between my pregnancies with calorie counting and I know it works for me. I'm honestly 100% not able to just intuitively eat. Tons of people can but that's what made me obese in the first place. I spent like 10 years as an obese vegan! So I've been using MyFitnessPal to count calories and it's helped me so much. I can eat whatever I want and because I know I'm staying within my calories I know I won't gain weight. But it's what I know works for me personally, and I know it's not for everyone.

Good luck! I've spent both my pregnancies super worried about weight gain and it's not fun.

@catlady I agree. Definitely some people just gain more/some pregnancies gain more. I think as long as you're eating (reasonably) healthy and listening to your body, it's probably okay. I gained 40 with my son, I'm pretty thin and it freaked me out, but to be honest I think my body needed that extra weight for the pregnancy and breastfeeding!

@PixieStix: I tell myself that I fall into that group too (although luckily since I kept my gain just at the max recommended, nobody reprimanded me too hard). Nobody believed me that I even gained as much as I did. My babies were both totally average sized. I pushed my first out in a half hour and my second out in minutes. :)

@winniebee: That all sounds good. Pb toast is one of my favorites. It's funny though because I go from one extreme to another. I'll eat loads of sweets and then get strict again and tell myself that wheat bread is bad (I've seen good results from low carb eating). It's silly what we tell ourselves. :p

@MOMTOLITTLEB: Good options there. I'm wondering if I can replace dessert with a home made fruit smoothie with no added sugar? How does that treat you? P.s. I don't count calories either.

@catlady: I wonder if I fall in to that group of just naturally gaining more. Not to excuse my eating habits and such but I'm told I wear the weight really well, by several people who don't seem like they're just trying to make a preggo lady feel better. My midwife did say that the more weight you gain, the tougher the labor can be, and potentially the bigger the baby. But I'm still doing weight lifting so I hope that even if I continue to gain weight that I'll still be in good shape for pushing out that baby!

I would try to relax and be kind to yourself. Maybe try to make some better food choices if you can handle it and do some light workouts, but don't beat yourself up if you can't. My first pregnancy, I went nuts trying to be super healthy and keep weight gain to a minimum, but I still gained 35 lbs (which is a lot on my 5ft frame) and it caused me a lot of anxiety. I ended up losing it all without too much trouble, although it took a bit longer than I wanted so I beat myself up during the initial post-partum period too. My 2nd pregnancy, I still ate mostly healthy and worked out, but I let myself relax more about food choices and the weight gain in general. I ended up gaining the exact same amount. Post-partum, it has again been coming off slowly but I am trying to not worry about it. I am 4 months post-partum and 3 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight (and about 10 from where I'd like to be).

I know it's unhealthy when women gain like 100 pounds during pregnancy, but I do wish there wasn't so much emphasis on keeping weight gains limited because I feel like some women's bodies probably just naturally put on more weight during pregnancy and the whole weight gain thing causes everyone way too much stress in general.

@PixieStix: I eat the same thing for lunch everyday- a low carb veggie wrap with baked chicken and a slice of cheese- usually have something on the side, beans or veggies. Breakfast is usually high protein cereal with almond milk or a bagel thin with peanut butter- these aren't really on the GD diet but they don't cause spikes for me. Dinners are some kind of chicken with veggies, turkey tacos, turkey burgers. Snacks I have nuts and fruit, greek yogurt smoothies or protein bars. Since you don't have GD, you probably don't have to worry about the spikes so you can have more variety but I like knowing what will work for me. The nurse did give me a calorie limit, I think it was 1900 but I don't count calories, just carbs and protein.

@PixieStix: Good job! Definitely DO NOT go hungry. Just do your best to make good (and filling) choices! Protein goes a long way for me. Today I'm eating: whole grain toast with PB (Breakfast), crispix with banana (snack), quesadilla with salsa and avacado (lunch), cohabit (snack, if needed), and pasta with ground sausage and broccoli in garlic sauce (dinner).

@annem1990: I ate around the clock as well! Even though I was sick, sweet stuff was the only thing that made me feel better emotionally and physically.

@MOMTOLITTLEB: I'll look into that diet. Any recipes or ideas you can recommend?

So far today I started off with a black coffee and pb with banana, a little salt and cinnamon. Lunch was scrambled eggs with some lunch meat, half an avocado and berries. Planning on making thai chicken stir fry for dinner with rice noodles. I really want to see this through!

I'm not advocating for eating whatever you want whenever you want, but I wouldn't worry a ton about it. Try to make good choices and incorporate as many nutrient dense foods as you can so you and baby are both getting lots of good stuff in your systems, take a walk at the end of the day, etc., but don't beat yourself up too much. Just make small changes and tackle any left over weight after the pregnancy AND after you've had some time to settle in post-partum. Be gentle with yourself.

This is my third pregnancy. With the twins, I gained 35 lbs total. With my single boy, I gained 38 lbs total. With my current pregnancy, at 20 weeks, I'm still down several pounds because I've been sick a lot, but I'm sure by the end it will still be 25+ pounds gained. You would think I would have gained more with a twin pregnancy than with my single one, but I ate pretty much the exact same way with both pregnancies and actually worked out more with the second one and I still gained more weight that time. That's why I think while you should try to make good choices and not go crazy with "eating for two" or just eating junk all the time, your body will gain different amounts with each pregnancy and it will all be okay in the end!

I'm 26 weeks and gained a bunch from 20-24 weeks, more than I wanted. So, after 24 weeks, I cut the nightly dessert. I was eating a brownie sundae or ice cream every frigging night! I do get those cravings still but instead I am eating a bowl of fruit. I also find if I think about what I'm going to eat/meal plan for each day, I'm more apt to make better choices. For example, for my mid morning snack I'll eat a chobani yogurt before I get too hungry to make a good choice. I'm also eating whole grain toast with PB for breakfast which is helping to keep me fuller for longer in the morning. I tend to eat most of my calories by 3 pm so I just try to make good choices during the day. My working out is lame, but I go on walks (30-45 minutes) at least 4x a week. I also tend to only gain 10 lbs in the third trimester....I think a lot of women are like that and maybe you are, too!

I gained so much weight in my first pregnancy, it was a lot of swelling and fluid and I did have a big baby but still, it was so hard to carry around. I've gained very little this time, it was slow to start and never really took off- one reason might be that I have gestational diabetes this time. So I would recommend that you try following a modified GD diet and include light exercise. I don't follow the diet super strictly because my numbers are good and spikes are rare. I concentrate on balancing carbs and protein and have added a lot of vegetables. It seems like a common sense way for any pregnant woman to eat, I just needed the push to do it.

@PixieStix: I don't have any advice, just want to tell you you're not alone! I'm 15weeks and have gained 20ish lbs. All I could stomach the first trimester was carbs and I ate round-the-clock to stave off nausea. Im hoping things will slow down now that my appetite is more normal, but who knows. I just keep reminding myself that weight gain is necessary.

I swear every woman in my life has a similar story...45,50, even 100lbs (in high-risk twin pregnancy). They are all back to normal BMI and resumed their fit lifestyle.

I wouldn't worry too much. Like others said just make good choices, dont have too much sugar, and try to walk as much as you can.... I gained most of my baby weight earlier on then I feel like it was just a slow gain at the end as the baby got bigger. It luckily came off fast (faster the first time!)... but I tried not to worry too much. I feel like it can be out of your control sometimes! Good luck

@PixieStix: I'm discouraged by my weight gain this pregnancy too. I started at 160 and I'm up to 205 at 34 weeks. Last pregnancy I went from 155 to 195. I ate simple carbs for most of this pregnancy because its all I could stomach. Now I have no room, so I'm eating small healthy meals, but water retention is still making me gain weight. I'm just looking forward to going for long walks with a stroller and getting back into an exercise routine. Breastfeeding was a godsend for me and initial weight loss, so I'm counting on that again to lose the beginning bulk of it. I will still need some hardcore workout time to get the last bit off.

Just make good choices from here out and set yourself up for habits that you can continue after baby is here - like daily long walks or whatever kind of exercise is appropriate for your fitness level now. There's no use beating yourself up about something that you can't change, so just prepare for the future! Also, you may not gain tooooo much more if you eat right from here until the end. I gained a TON before 20 weeks and not as much in the second half of both of my pregnancies. I didn't change my eating, it just naturally happened that way for me. And my kids were definitely still growing in there..they ended up nearly 8lb each.

Be kind to yourself!

How do you all handle weight gain during pregnancy?

I'm up to a 30lb gain and just hitting 6 months in. I was doing great leading up to getting pregnant; I worked out 5 to 6 times a week at the gym, diet was pretty decent. I was in the best shape of my life and one of the lowest weight of my life (150lb at 5'6").

But once the first trimester hit I fell back in to old patterns. Emotional and boredom eating. I was eating anything sugary and carb loaded that didn't make me sick, and I was too exhausted and sick to go to the gym for the first couple months.

Today my midwife said 25-35lb gain was the most they wanted to see. Now granted I brought up the subject, and she was super nice and not judgey at all about it, but now I'm all disappointed in myself. I gained 10 lbs in 1 month, and this was not what I had planned at all, but now I'm afraid I don't have the willpower to fix this.

So how do you deal? I could use some encouragement.
