@Jennibenni: we plan to try for number two in a few months, so nothing for now. Next time I will try Skyla. Less hormones, still have light periods, and is good for. 3 years!

@dc yoga bee: What are you doing instead? I had Paragard before and I know I won't go back to that and the options are so slim!

@Jennibenni: I removed it. I've gained 23lbs since getting it in late July. I joined a weight loss group at work, bought (and use) a treadmill and lost a whopping 2lbs last month. The doctor told me she expects I will lose 5-10lbs immediately.

Just to follow up!

I met with my doctor today, and she said she removes two of these a week due to weight gain. She couldn't tell I've gained by looks, but the scale doesn't lie and I'm still EBF at 9 months old and pumping!

I made an apt at the end of this month to discuss with the doctor. She said it could be my thyroid, probably isn't Mirena but a small amount of patients do gain.

@Smurfette: @avivoca: I just started tracking this week to really get an accurate look at what's going on, and to show the doctor. Last night for dinner we had baked fish, green beans, and rice. Oatmeal everyday for breakfast, and eggs once I get to work. Breastfeeding does make me ravenous, but I brought more fruit, and a healthy choice steamer (gross won't buy that again!) usually I eat a turkey sandwich, or salad with chicken for lunch. Im trying to eat better, and am going to track all month to see what happens by apt time at end of the month. Yesterday, I did barre. Today I'm doing yoga at lunch, and I also started back running.

@peachykeen: If we go for number two, we were thinking of trying in October when DD is 1.5. There's no way I want to get pregnant until I lose the weight, so I'm thinking of having it removed now to allow my body to even out. I plan to breastfeed until she's a year in May too, so I totally get hormones are everywhere!

Gah, thanks for the feedback everyone!

Nah, but i do think that hormonal fluctuations can make you hungrier, which can make you gain weight. I've still lost a fair amount of weight since having mine put in, but it's diet and exercise.

I don't have Mirena, but my body holds onto weight like crazy when I'm breastfeeding and once I stopped I started to lose. What kinds of food are you eating? Have you had your thyroid checked? Are you getting enough protein and good fats in your diet?

I *thought* I had gained weight on Mirena and talked at length with my OB about it. She said she's never seen weight gain with Mirena where there wasn't other attributable causes.

I'm on my second Mirena and currently weigh less than pre-LO and less than when I got married. So, I don't know! I don't think Mirena caused my weight gain (or, at least not wholly) and it hasn't hampered my losing weight. But, I had a hell of a time losing the baby weight for like 2 years, and then suddenly it all like slid right off. Bodies are weird.

I've been on the Mirena for 15 months and I have wondered this and hope it is the reason I haven't been able to lose any weight since I got it. I have gone through periods of eating really healthy/carefully and periods of being less careful, but cutting out calories and different vices has had virtually no effect on my weight (could be my metabolism changing too, I guess). We're starting to think about TTC #2 in the next year and I want to get my weight down to pre-baby levels. I keep wondering if I had the Mirena removed now if I would have better results. But I really like not having a period, so I'll probably wait...

I didn't have any trouble with weight gain last time, I had it for four years pre-TTC.

I've lost a ton of weight this time, but I had it inserted after my c-section so a lot of that was baby weight.

I don't think that I gained weight when I was on it. But I got it at like 10 weeks PP and I was still nursing a lot. I do think I gained some weight from getting it removed. It couldn't have been all holiday weight. Sigh, now having to relose it.

Are you tracking what you eat? If your energy is down, maybe you aren't eating enough.

I gained 32lbs and jumped to 37lbs that last week with pre-eclampsia. The midwife said that last 5lbs was water weight. I lost 27 of the 37lbs by two weeks. I hadn't been eating a whole lot as evidenced by when my supply drops because I didn't eat enough at work that day. I did have a latte a couple times a week for a few months so I'll give you that. But, I can't wrap my head around how I would then gain back 23 of those pounds in 8months when breastfeeding burns 500-calories, and I really don't have that big of an appetite. And I'm still walking, doing yoga here and there, and some barre. My energy levels are down too. I just looked up side effect of Mirena. Weight gain may be a side effect. Has anyone contributed weight gain to their Mirena?
