I never thought about the weight of our birth pool. We used the personal size of the" birth pool in a box" kit. We set it up in our bedroom, next to our bed and close enough to our master bath. My midwife never mentioned any concerns about the weight, she just let us know how to best set it up in our space.

@VEGMAMA: Yeah, that would probably be the most convenient. Our main floor bathroom is tiny and narrow and that was a problem I kept running into when picturing the birth tub in the living room, but the bathroom in the basement is much more open (bathroom/family closet/laundry room) and when the thought of moving the whole thing to the basement hit me it just felt right and I was just like, "Yes!" If I was having a summer baby, is totally put my birth pool outside, but this baby is due in November and it will be super cozy in the basement with the wood stove burning.

@VEGMAMA: While I have no idea about the weight of a birth tub, I know exactly what you mean about your DH pointing out everything that is wrong! My DH is an architect too. He points out ridiculous things that are so hard to unsee now!

@Mrs. Twine: I'm glad I'm not alone! Seriously, everywhere we go DH is knocking on walls/surfaces, swooning over architecture, and complaining about anything that is 'wrong', ha. Good to know about the tub on the weight of an upstairs bedroom!

@FarmWifeGina: A birthing cave! Love it!! The home we're hoping to get is one floor with a basement (partially finished), but the bathroom is on the main floor, so I'd love to put it up there.

I had this question too, so I decided to set everything up in the basement. Sounds like I probably wouldn't need to worry about setting it up on the main floor, but my plan is to turn the basement room into a cozy birthing cave and I'm pretty set on that, lol.

We had the tub all set up. My hubby is an engineer-- so his mind went there, too. Our home was built pre-1900 and we had the tub set up in an upstairs bedroom and had no problem. I never got to be in it because we ended up being a hospital transfer, but we had many people standing next to it once it was full. He did research the weight of a "full" tub of the sort we were using and did some equations to figure it out. He felt safe and comfortable with the conclusions he reached.

DH and I aren't in the place we'll be living when we have our baby (hopefully soon), but we've both been concerned about an older home (early 1900's) with the weight of a birth tub.

For those of you who did a home birth, and used a tub, was there any concern (or did the company you rented from warn about the weight)?

DH is an architect, so his brain automatically goes to load capacity and thinking my & baby are going to crash through the floor.
