I wonder if the no onesie rule could be the provider having trouble with the fine motor skill required for snaps?

Most workplaces are scent free, so #1 doesn’t bother me because I never wear scents anyway. I don’t really think any of the rules are that weird but it does seem sort of weird once they’re written out!

The children can only wear separates would be my biggest issue with the examples you provided. My kids live in onesies and sleep and plays so that right there would be a no go. Occasionally the baby will come home with his onesie unsnapped but I assume they had to wrap up his diaper change quickly.

Overall it does seem like a lot of rules. I can't think of anything at our day care center that I would consider a "weird" or 'unusual" rule or request.

@skinnycow: I highly doubt you're annoying your daycare with the onesies/sleepers.

Sleep and Plays (footed zipper sleepers) are like the EASIEST thing to me to keep my youngest in. I mean, it's a zipper? Sometimes I feel bad I don't dress her in 'real' clothes more often but hey, she's a baby. And our home daycare doesn't care. She actually prefers these over traditional outfits due to all the reasons above about shirts riding up and having to wiggle feet into shorts or pants haha

Yeah, agreed that the Up & Up and onesie ones are weird. I put my 8 month old in one-piece pjs or onesies everyday because she has eczema on her side/belly that she'll scratch at if she can get to her skin. I hope I'm not annoying my daycare by putting her in pjs!

I would be super annoyed about the no-onesie rule. My son had severe eczema as a baby and onesies were necessary to keep him from scratching himself up even worse as we worked to get flareups under control. The diaper thing would also annoy me if it removed my only economical option for getting diapers. Scents I can understand. And parking - maybe a neighbor complained about people being parked in front or something???

The diaper one is the weirdest. We only use Up and Up diapers and they work great for us. We switched to them after mostly using Pampers for my older kid's first two years, and have saved so much money. I'd be tempted to ask if they want to pay the difference for name brand diapers if we couldn't use them... We don't belong to costco, so Kirkland doesn't work, and other cheap options like Aldi aren't located conveniently. That one is odd.

As for the parking issue, there really isn't one. It's all street parking and plenty of it. The children can't see through the front windows. @ALV91711: @graceandjoy: @Becky:

A lot of that seems extreme. Separates for babies?! Are you kidding me?

The only weird rule our daycare had that was similar was no Kirkland brand wipes because they gave one of the teachers a rash.

@hitchhiker: @PurplePeony: I am totally cool with having my kid be as scent free as possible, but I think it's a little extreme to require all people who drop offs and pick ups to be scent-free too.

I am sure that the fragrance thing is due to a sensitivity. I also get migraines due to scents, and am not sure why it needs to be communicated more gently than other allergies. If a kid in the daycare was allergic to nuts, they would just say: No nuts! For a while I had an employee who just would not stop wearing very scented products (even though our office has a no scent policy) and it was very difficult for me to do my job because I was going down with migraines on the regular.

@crazydoglady: my DH’s company is a scent-free workplace and they’re pretty hardcore about it. People have been spoken to by HR about wearing perfume/cologne/scented lotion/etc. I think it’s getting a lot more common than it used to be so I don’t see it as that unreasonable for adults, though I agree that a couple minutes at drop-off/pick-up probably isn’t that big an issue unless someone there is highly allergic.

Can the kids see the street from the house windows? That’s another reason I can think of for the parking rule — if a kid sees the parent sitting outside and has a tantrum, it makes the provider’s job that much harder.

Super, super weird. Makes me eternally grateful
for my really laid back daycare.

The no one-piece is bizarre—my kids wore onesies under everything! I guess maybe if you live somewhere warm? No way would this fly somewhere there is winter!

You should get to choose your diaper brand (I get providers that don’t allow cloth).

The no scent laundry detergent thing could be handled more gently. Like, we have some kids here who are very sensitive to scents so please use fragrance free products.

I like the parking rule and wish my center had it. There are only 4 spaces at ours and it drives me insane when I see people looking at their phone in the lot especially because they could literally just pull into the street first (there’s space to pull over there).

That’s really weird. I guess I understand about the parking since one would hold up space for other parents to park/drop off. And the scent thing, I would ask if there is someone with sensitivity/allergy to scent? I use free & clear but I put EO on my wool dryer balls because I like our clothes to smell nice! I would be annoyed with that unless it’s really to accommodate someone. Lastly, the diaper is just weird; I happen to use Up&Up so I would not be okay with that. I know ours don’t want the Pampers pull ups because they don’t have tabs so they would have to take off shoes/pants to put on a new diaper which I totally understand.

@kiddosc: @ALV91711: @lindseykaye: @KT326: @bhbee: I guess it's not so much about the specific ones, but that there are a number of these.

1 is understandable depending on the parking. Our daycare parking lot is small and can get crazy at busy times.

You should be able to choose what brand of diapers you want and put your kiddos in what clothes you want. Yes snaps can be a bit of a pain but not that much.

If someone has a scent allergy or sensitivity I can understand the last one.

I would assume that the provider or (if this is in a home, someone in their family) has a sensitivity to fragrances. One of my coworkers gets migraines really easily from all sorts of fragrances and we've instituted a no-fragrance guidance that is discussed with all new empoyees.

The diaper thing is very specific, but may also be related to fragrance or sensitivity of some kind. It also might be because she's had several bad experiences with the quality and doesn't have the capacity to deal with leaks or blowouts or whatever happened in the past.

We use a home daycare provider and she has none of these rules, but I have even seen larger centers with quirky rules that make me scratch my head.

#1 I can see if parking is limited. Our daycare parking lot can get crowded at certain times of day and it drives me crazy when parents just sit in their car as I circle the lot. Especially since I usually have to pick up my oldest as well who is at a different school.

Super weird. I can sort of understand the onesie/snaps thing, since presumably this is an at-home situation and she needs to be able to do diaper changes as quickly as possible.

Ok, so I will start by saying that our daycare is reasonably priced, loves our daughter, and treats her well even with all these quirks. I just have to ask, are these "normal" rules?

1. Parents cannot stay inside their parked car in front of house for a length of time (like finishing up a phone call before getting child.)
2. Child can not use Up-and-Up brand diapers and will be returned to parents
3. Children (including babies) can only wear separates (i.e. no onesies, clothes that snap at crotch, one pieces, etc.)
4. No scents are allowed. Children's laundry must only be washed in unscented laundry detergent and parents must refrain from using perfumes, fragrant laundry detergents, etc because the smell can rub off on the child when handled by parent.

This is not typical, right? I get that if I don't like it, we can move on, but it seems like the list keeps getting longer. And I am always worried that I have worn some product that makes me "smell" because they have brought it to my attention TWICE! I stopped wearing perfume due to this daycare already.
