Maybe it's a snack vs meal thing, but if I eat a bunch/go to sleep with a full belly, I usually end up waking with indigestion or heart burn. No fun!

@serenity207: if it works for you then no need to change

Different people need to eat different amts of food at different times- I remember reading that you should never eat before bed and then I read that eating carbs before bed actually helps you sleep better - so, yeah, do what works for you!

I would not suggest eating ice cream as a meal though.

I think if it's healthy, it's fine. Some people eat 5 big snacks/small meals a day instead of three big meals. It's supposed to be better for you I think.

I'm weird when it comes to eating too, but in a different way. If I get TOO hungry, I get full so much faster, to the point where I probably don't eat enough. Sometimes I start to feel nauseous while eating when this happens. I've learned that when I travel, I can't let myself get too hungry so I pack a lot of snacks for the airport!

I also could never replace a meal with ice cream or junk food. I would feel so sick if I did this! Also, eating ice cream on a empty stomach is never a good idea for me!

I think as long as you're eating healthy goods it doesn't matter how often or what time you're eating. There's a difference between being a graze and over eating. As long as you're being mindful, I don't think it's an issue. And there have been studies done that show that eating prior to sleep makes no difference in fat storage or overall calories versus the same foods eaten earlier in the day.

@serenity207: I'm the same. I like to "save" my calories and have a bunch of snacks while watching tv before bed. I hate the idea of having multiple small meals through the day. I never feel full! I always joke that binge eating before bed in my favorite hobby :silly: I believe that calories are calories no matter when you eat them. I'm not overweight and I eat healthy things (for the most part). It's actually helped me control my weight by allowing myself to skip meals and then make up for it later. Because before I would eat meals and then still snack a bunch before bed....

Not just you. I am, and have always been a snacker. My parents are as well, so it seems normal to me. My family doesn't have weight issues, but we are all active, outdoorsy people who go for walks every day and our snacks are usually healthy. Lots of fruit, crackers and cheese, nuts, yogurt, etc.

I don't believe it's unhealthy, so long as you're paying attention to when you're full, eating healthy foods, staying active, and maintaining a balanced diet. I eat meals, but small ones. I'm a small person, I don't like to eat large quantities in one sitting.

Hehe, interesting thread.

I guess if you look and feel good with just snacks replacing one meal, it's OK I guess? Personally, I take mealtimes quite seriously and it's been like that since I was a child (with a short break in the college years - I would be happily eating a muffin and a coffee, or just a snickers bar for lunch! Oh I miss snickers bars). Especially with a 4 year old I take it very seriously because I want to set up a good example and set up good eating habits for him early on. I watched 2 episodes of The Biggest Loser the other day, and the younger obesed contestant who comes with their obese parent would say how she had never had an establishment of good eating habits growing up. I think it is very important, this is one thing that I am pretty sure I can do it right :)

I myself am trying to eat right (with portion control) and exercise these days, and there are times I also wish I could just eat that chocolate cake and not eat lunch! Then I end up eating both and feel very bad afterwards lol.

Maybe you can replace one meal of the day with a chocolate protein shake? This is something I am contemplating about myself. How do you go to bed with a full stomach and still control your weight? I guess I am getting old and my metabolism no longer keeps up!

@AB810 - oh, there are definitely times when I have a meal and then snack again later too! I feel so restless without something to snack on. Yikes!

This sounds just like my husband, except he doesn't forgo the meal! He ALWAYS snacks before bed because he likes to go to sleep with a really full stomach. I think my daughter is the same way.

I love food and eating...food is on my mind pretty much around the clock! That being said, I think I make reasonably nutritious choices during the week (i.e. not a lot of junk food, eating whole grains, etc.). Let's not talk about my weekend eating though.

The thing is, I LOVE to snack and especially love to eat before I go to sleep while I'm reading (this goes back to elementary school). Most times, I'd rather forgo a meal and then just have a bunch of snacks while reading or watching something on the TV. And then pass out afterwards with a full stomach. I completely understand the "milk drunk" happiness of infants...nothing like a full stomach followed by a snooze. :silly:

Instinctively, this feels like a bad habit...but I'm curious to know if it actually is. Is it important to have meals or is snacking okay as long as it's not complete junk? Admittedly, I do swap meals for a huge bowl of ice cream instead sometimes...or, let's be real, sometimes it's the meal and the ice cream! Also, does it matter when you eat, such as before you sleep?
