I am actually kind of surprised MY parents allowed it, because they were really strict about me even sleeping over a friends house if it wasn't a party with a bunch of other girls around...looking back I now realize the reason was because my parents weren't sure they could trust the other parents! I babysat, mostly, for two families that lived in walking distance from my home. One of the dads, father of three girls, used to walk me home. The other family lived a bit further away, but the parents had two boys and sometimes the mom or dad would give me a ride home. I never had any issues with the dads. After awhile I was so happy when both families stopped insisting on walking or driving me home. Walking alone in quiet was so much nicer.</p> <p>I hadn't really thought about a potential problem for DH to drive a babysitter home. Team no phony lawsuits! Driving home and then back out before crashing into bed does not sound like fun. I actually have really great memories of the conversations I had with one mom in particular. She gave me great advice and she was kind of a mentor to me. </p> <p>The only skeevy dad story I remember is not at all sexual. The dad of a family I'd never babysat for before came to pick me up. He ran over a squirrel on my street and didn't acknowledge it at all. Just the *buh-bump* of the squirrel getting hit and then "so, how is school going?". There's no way he didn't know that he hit it. One night, he drove me home instead of her and I was SO uncomfortable being alone with him. And he was completely nice and definitely not hitting on me! I think I must have been a sophomore in college, because I know I had my own car at that point. </p> <p>I was babysitting on a regular basis, like bi-weekly, for a family with a toddler and an infant, mainly during the day when the mom either worked from home or had to run errands, etc. Usually the dad wasn't home. </p> <p>They asked me to babysit for an evening once, and when they got home, the dad had obviously been drinking. I had my own car but the dad asked me to stick around while the mom went and checked on the kids and then she'd come back to pay me. When she was back in another part of the house he starting making comments about how I was lucky to be young and pretty, and asking if I had a boyfriend, and making other inappropriate comments. He was leering at me, clearly intoxicated, it was gross. His wife actually came back in and, right in front of me, started going off on him about flirting with me!?!? It was so uncomfortable. I had gathered from passing comments she'd made before that they were having a hard time with their relationship at that point, but OMG. I was more worried about alcohol though and there were a couple of times where I thought both parents might be impaired and my "home" was a dorm room in high school, so I had no other way to get home aside from taking my chances.</p> <p>The worst thing that happened to me was when I was babysitting for the weekend (why would they let a 14-15 year old do this in the first place?!). On the first night we were flipping channels for something to watch on TV. I picked the Cosby Show as good wholesome family entertainment. Oldest kid said, "mom and dad don't let us watch this show because they are uppity n-words". I almost died. I was not well-versed in cultural conversations at the time... But I stammered something out about not using that word and how what was just said was very racist. I changed the channel... But I wanted to get out of that house right that minute... But I had to stay there and care for those kids all weekend and then face those awful parents at the end of it. Terrible stuff! Grandparents are more than happy when we need a sitter so we are lucky that way! I'm sure it will come up as our kids get older though. </p>
