That's bizarre. Do you even know if she's still there? Have you called? Is she having some kind of issues?

Although, DH sometimes does adjunct teaching and poor communication from the administration is the rule, not the exception. Not total silence, but replies that contain zero information, lack of communication about schedule for the next semester until the last week of August... that kind of thing.

This is bizarre and totally unprofessional for the magnitude of the situation. But, it makes me think of my own boss. We are a small business and it doesn’t relate to your situation, but basically my boss never replies to emails or texts because she hates the internet and discussing things over email or text. Recently I sent her my parental leave proposal via email to have a written record and total silence for 3 weeks until I brought it up awkwardly, which she then said ‘oh yeah I forgot to talk to you’ and set a meeting to discuss. Same thing with a day I had to take off as my son was sick. I texted her and she never said a word. It drives all of us CRAZY and is so annoying to have to set in person meetings to discuss every little thing. Perhaps your boss is like this? Personally, I would escalate to her higher up or HR so you can get this wrapped up, leave them copies of all the emails you have to be clear and give proof, wipe your hands and enjoy your new job. In person I think I would feel way too awkward unless it was a situation where you need to continue to ha be a relationship with her.

@Mrs. Lion: I think communicating with HR is a good idea. I don’t understand why all the communication with your supervisor is email. You need to give written notice but I’ve always done it in conjunction with a conversation. Do you work in different locations? I would pick up the phone or set up a meeting to try to figure out what is going on. My industry is really small though and how you leave things at one company will definitely be broadcast around.

This does sound weird like something else is going on and not just the supervisor has poor communication skills.

Something similar maybe I can think of is....the supervisor is also transitioning out of the position and can't really tell anyone? So she can't respond directly to your inquiries? I don't know....I'm kind of reaching :silly:

@Mrs. Lion: good call. I would think HR needs to be involved at some point anyway since you are terminating. I can't believe she ghosted you, though, and do still believe a higher up should know. That is a complete unprofessional management style.

Ooh HR is a good option. I know the HR ladies very well (one of whom has been doing my in and out paperwork for like 15 of my 18 years there...it's a running joke :silly: ) I just forwarded the email to them and said that I had sent earlier in the week and also sent a text but had not received a response. I am going to screen shot all of my texts to her to save just in case. I trust my HR ladies that if it needs to go up the chain it will.

I think you should definitely escalate up the food chain a little bit to try and get a response and I agree with the wording @MrsLonghorn suggested. This is incredibly unprofessional. I think a supervisor would want to know that an employee in a supervisory position is ghosting an employee who 1. wanted to stay and 2. has now given notice due to the communication issues.

@Mrs. Lion: It would absolutely not be overstepping to email the CEO, if that's your boss's supervisor. You have done everything and then some, and no one has confirmed your status change. This could be a big HR liability (of their own doing, which makes this even more baffling). This is not on you at all. @MrsLongHorn's comment is spot on about how to phrase the email to the CEO and why you definitely should send one, with documentation of your attempts to communicate.

Wow, this is SO unprofessional of your supervisor.
If at all possible, I would go into the office and meet her in person - she can't ignore you there, and you will know for certain that she heard you.
Alternatively, I would do what @Mrs. Carrot said -- especially since you haven't received nay confirmation to your giving notice. I would email her supervisor and say something like "over the last 2 weeks, I have sent Boss 3 emails and have received no confirmation or response of any kind. Given the nature of the situation, I wanted to let you know, to ensure that we are all in agreement about my last day at the YMCA." (I would then include a very brief summary of how you really wanted to stay, but got no response, so to best support your family you took another role and your last day will be XX.
This isn't really tattling on your supervisor, because you need to be certain that the YMCA knows when your last day is, and doesn't 1) stop paying you too early, or 2) think you just stopped showing up/doing work when you thought it was your last day.

Our pay is automated so I assume that will go through. Not sure about my mileage reimbursement but will cross my fingers. She is one of just a couple VPs for a pretty huge association, so I don't think there is even a supervisor to contact other than the CEO, who I do not know personally and it would feel like overstepping over something this small...

I know she is busy and traveling all the time, but um...still. And she added me as a friend on facebook at the beginning of the summer, so I am seeing her updates and such. This is so odd you guys. Maybe she just isn't a great communicator? But how do you get to be such a high position without being able to communicate? It feels like I have done something really wrong but I have no idea what that would be. :bummed:

I agree with everything that @Mrs. Carrot: said. I actually think it is completely unprofessional to not talk to you about it and not even respond to your communications. I would error on the side of caution and reach out to someone to ensure that you are getting paid for the remainder of your time there.

And good luck on your new job!

Does your supervisor have a supervisor? You have absolutely done your due diligence, and your supervisor's lack of communication is both bizarre and unprofessional. If there is someone above her you can go to, I would also do that, just to fully cover all bases. Send an email attaching all the previous emails you've sent your supervisor, and let them know you've had no response and that you are planning to finish your last task on X date and turn in your computer, and just ask if there's anything else they need. If there isn't anyone above her, then yes, wrap up, and head out. Sounds like this is a person not worth working for anyway. Yay for your new opportunity!

This is really strange.... I don't understand what the deal is. She obviously got your message if they posted the job the next day, but it's beyond odd that she didn't respond to you.

I guess I would finish the last task you have on your plate and if you haven't heard anything else by that time, just hand in the computer. (Assuming you're confident you are going to get paid to complete the task. If you're wondering about that even, I would stop into the actual office and have a chat about whether or not they want you to keep working at all).

So I am completely baffled by a current work situation and was wondering if any of you ladies had advice/insight...

I have worked on and off for our local YMCA for 18 years. I worked in a corporate full time role for a year and a half until last summer, when I decided the commute would be too long. This summer I reached out to my old supervisor to see if they needed any help during the summer while I was out of school. It just so happened that my supervisor was leaving, and they really did need someone to step in to manage some of our grant programs (my former job) since it is a pretty specialized position.

I decided in June that I really would like to stay with the Y, and mentioned this to my current supervisor (my old supervisor's boss) and it was basically crickets. The only information I got from her was that they were reorganizing and didn't know what might be happening, or when any jobs might be posted. I assumed that meant my position would be ending at the end of August, which is what we had discussed, unless I heard otherwise. I did mention that I would really like to stay on with the Y if that was an option, but after 2 months I still hadn't heard anything.

Last Thursday I sent her a message letting her know that my work for the summer was basically complete, and asked if there was anything else I could help with in August. I pretty much have one small task left to wrap up, but that is it unless more work is assigned to me. She never responded.

Because of the uncertainty, I decided to accept an unexpected job offer outside of this organization. On Wednesday, after accepting the offer, I sent her a message to let her know what had changed and why, that I completely understood that she didn't know the future of my position and that I decided finding something secure was what was best for my family. I told her that the last day I would be available for additional tasks would be August 15 (more than 2 weeks notice), and that I would be happy to help with transition/training. More crickets. Not a single word about any of this from her. But that afternoon my position was posted on their job listings website.

It is now Friday and I have still not heard a word from her. I sent one additional text letting her know that I hoped that there were no hard feelings about my decision and that I would love the opportunity to talk with her further, but no response to that either. At this point I feel like the number of times I have tried to communicate is excessive, but I am not sure what else to do. I would like to at least have direct confirmation from her that she received my notice. I have a really long history with this company, and I really do not want to leave on bad terms.

Sorry for the novel....but does anyone have any insight about this? Should I do anything else, or just wrap up my last task and turn in my computer? I am working from home on an as needed basis, so I am not in the office.
