I have to agree we aren't 100% happy with our in home but we're 90% happy. I'm very against the centers in my city, so in home or not working were my options. Right now I'm unemployed but when I go back to work we'll use in home again.

I'm sorry you didn't like what you saw but maybe if you try a few more you'll find something.

@littlejoy: The toddler house sounds promising! Do you have any church based programs near you? We love how nurturing ours is.

@littlejoy: it's not a waste because it gave you a baseline. Sometimes it helps when you know something is wrong so when it's right you will have a point of reference, you know?

@jedeve: @ILoveLettie: It's not that we are against centers, there just aren't many options like that where we live. This is a kid town, so most centers are "schools" that cost $1,000+ per month.

We are going to an openhouse tomorrow for a toddler house. It's Montessori/RIE based. Brand new, but the teachers are known in town. I feel like the home setting seemed cozier, but you're right ... I don't want to see how someone is living, when all I should be seeing is a safe place for my kid. I think this is the route we will go (the toddler house). Keeping my fingers crossed!!! It's pricey, but actually works out to $7 per hour.

In homes vary a lot, we found ours on Craigslist but then asked about her at our parenting group and she was highly recommended. We love it. I don't think you will find something you are 100% happy with, but we are 90% happy with ours and it's worked out really well for us. We couldn't afford a nanny, but I was very against a center. Keep looking!

I found A LOT of variability with both centers and in-home daycares (more so with the in-home). I know it's super stressful, but keep looking! I think you will know the right place when you see it.

@littlejoy: I use a nanny, and it's not horrible doing the taxes. There are a lot of services available to do them for you, too, if you don't want to do them yourself ! Just search "nanny taxes".

We are in a nanny share, but you can't do a contractor situation to my knowledge. We use a nanny tax payroll service (Savvy Nanny) and it's really simple!

@jedeve: Agreed. I was totally anti-center but I was desperate: needed care for our 1 yr old in 2 weeks and we'd given up finding a pt Nanny/babysitter. Our center has been amazing. So professional, small ratios, our daughter knows all the staff and is so safe and loved!

Are you totally against centers? I know sometimes they get a bad rap, but personally I felt so much more comfortable with one. Everything is designed for kids and the people there are just there to watch kids. I know home daycares can sound cozier, but it sounds like some of the issues you've had (vacation days, not baby proofed) are taken care of at centers.

Sorry you didn't like the place. We did a nanny share and used a payroll service called Breedlove. They were easy to work with and did all the paperwork, taxes, etc. However - it was definitely expensive. Most people I knew paid off the books.

Sorry you are having such a hard time. Did you try to search any Mother's Day out programs? Like local churches or school that kids can you to for 5 days a week, even if they are babies/toddlers? Is there a site for your city that recommends things to do with kids, maybe it also has something on reviews of local day options for them. Good luck!

@littlejoy: I'm sorry it wasn't what you were expecting. Does your state have a licensed listing site you can check out? Any mom FB groups you can join to ask for recos?

We just interviewed with an in-home daycare. It wasn't the worst, but just totally not what I expected.

The home wasn't clean, and while all of the furniture was secured correctly, there were cords, trash cans, trinkets, and non-baby things all over the place. The room she'd be napping in smelled like dog pee, and yeah, they don't have a dog. On paper, it was the perfect place. I feel like it's going to be a lot of this.

I am feeling so lost in trying to find a place for my LO. This town is impossible for nannies/daycares/houses.

Ok, vent over!! Do any of you host or use a nanny share? If you host, how are taxes handled? Am I right in understanding that a nanny share can just be a contractor situation? The thought of doing payroll for a nanny is too complicated and expensive for us.
