@Bao: So....did it happen naturally for your LO? ;)

We've backslid and I've nursed him for the past four nights. He was waking up at 5AM and seemed really hungry, but man did he nurse well throughout the day! My MIL was visiting and I felt bad for his crying in the middle of the night, plus I wanted to see if it would make him wake up later in the morning, and it worked half of the time, I think. Also, we will be staying with my parents for a week and I have no doubt that his sleep will be messed up, so might as well save the night weaning until after we are back! I also see that he has some teeth coming in, so I feel bad for him! But....this is how it started in the first place when the feedings gradually increased. Argh!

@CibMomma: Woo hooo!!! I'm envious!! DS goes down at 7:00 but has been waking up at 5:00AM for the past few nights since this whole night weaning thing! I think it's because he's actually hungry. >_< I guess that's the trade-off for us. STTN, and get up earlier!

@cranberryapple: she did pretty good! Cried in crib for 15 minutes when put down, DH went in to check. He stayed too long and held paci in her mouth till she fell asleep, but that's a big improvement for us. She woke at 11:15 and I nursed her- we aren't going to night wean just yet. Up again at 1:45, screamed for 30 minutes, DH did a check but she wasn't having it. I ended up nursing her at 2:40 and she went to sleep at 2:55. Up for the day at 6:45 laughing and smiling. So not total CIO, but big sleep improvements for us. I'm anxious to see how tonight goes!

I'm a little late to this thread, but we are starting CIO tonight and I'm finding all of your posts encouraging! DD is 9.5 months and wakes about every 1-2 hours... the only thing that will put her back to sleep is my boob, she cries hysterically if DH goes in there instead of me. Really hoping this works!

@cranberryapple: yay that is great to hear! I actually did not start but LO slept 10 hours, 9 hours and then 9 hours straight again before her first wake up then went back to bed for an additional 3 hours :) however, the past few nights she was up more but she has been sick :( so I can't find the heart to let her cry. I'm hoping by next week we get back in a better groove and can get better sleep again!

@Bao: Hiyee!! It has been a week, and we made it! The first night was the toughest, but then it got easy by the third night where I only heard him fussing just once. For the rest of the nights, *I* slept through the night and it was the most amazing thing ever! Our only regret was that we didn't do this sooner!! We share a room with DS and we have been sleeping outside of the room, so who knows what will happen when we go back inside, but at the moment, we don't wanna risk it. Soooooo, does this inspire you to start, or have you already started? ;)

@MaisyMay: In that case, cook the rice however you used to cook it... after it is done, maybe take out a bit from your portion of the rice, and put extra water to it and boil it for another while longer in a small pot. Then puree it with the cooked chicken for your LO. The consistency should be similar to chowder soup . Good luck!

@irene: Thanks. I'm going to be making chicken in the crock pot for us and boil rice for dinner. It sounds like if I puree them together, it'll be similar.

We did CIO at 6 months old or so. We had a horrible night where he couldn't settle at all, so it turned into CIO. The next week, we started CIO. The first couple of nights were rough, but he did manage to settle himself. We added a dream feed in there as well to push his sleep out until the morning. Last week and early this week, we were at my inlaws. I dropped the dream feed because I didn't want to get out of bed, too tired. LO slept right through it. We had a little regression, might have been teeth, a few nights ago. After a quick feed, he slept the rest of the night. I find if he's had enough to eat before bed and is tired for bed, he sleeps well. Teething has been our biggest sleep hurdle lately as he's cutting another this week. I swear my baby went from 0 to 5 teeth in a month or so.

@cranberryapple: Glad to know it went OK!! Cheers to STTN for everybody!!

@MaisyMay: Chicken porridge is kinda tricky if you don't have a Asian-made rice cooker that offers a porridge function... I don't really have an official recipe, but here's how I made it. It's been a while so I am just memorizing how I made it:

1 piece chicken thigh meat, cut into bite sizes
3-4 tbs of uncooked rice, washed
Water is the tricky part.... I add quite a lot of water, maybe 3-4 times more than if you were to make rice. (you really have to adjust it from trial and error, or follow the instructions of the rice cooker)

I'd put all these into my rice cooker, and press the porridge option. Or, you can use a regular small pot, use low heat, and constantly watching and stirring to prevent overboiling or rice burning/sticking to the bottom (that's why it is quite difficult to make it without a rice cooker). I wonder if you can do it with a slow cooker / crockpot? Add more water if it dries up, or boil longer if it is still too watery.

After 2-3+ hours, the rice chicken porridge should have a consistency of a chowder soup. For me, I'd put the mixture into the baby blender, and blend it so the chicken and rice becomes a thick smooth soup. Other than the serving that LO gets to eat that day (which I'd serve with pureed veggies), I will separate it into several small containers per serving, and freeze it for the whole week. It is enough to make 4-7 servings depending on the age of your baby and how much he/she eats. Each day, I'd take out one serving, 1 ice-cube of pureed broccoli and 1 ice-cube of pureed carrot (prepared in advance, of course), put them in a glass bowl and microwave it, mix and serve.

@Crumbs: Yay! Glad to hear your success story! DS gets even more upset when he knows we're there or when we pick him up and put him down. A part of me is kicking myself that I didn't try this sooner! =P

@CibMomma: Smart to nip it in the bud! DS was only waking up once a night when he was 5 months as well, and I thought I could handle it, but then it increased to two times, and then three times, and that's when I decided to put my foot down! Hmmm, only thing I didn't prepare for was my super duper engorged boob! Hahahaha. Awwww, so sweet to hear your LO woke up happy and smiley!

@cranberryapple: Sounds like its going well!

DS is 5 months and he had been only waking once at night for the past three months, but this past week, it had been 2 wakings and I had always had the goal in mind to get rid of that one night feeding/waking. I thought it's now or never, and I wanted to break the habit now before it became more entrenched in his routine. I was going to go with the Baby Whisperer's method of pick up put down, but in general our baby tends to get more overstimulated/confused if we keep going in to see him. Whereas if he just fusses himself to sleep it ends up being less crying overall. So DH and I decided last night we would just turn off the monitor. I looked at the monitor at like 5:15am and he was sleeping. When I woke him at 7am he looked up and smiled at me. Success for night one!

Last night was day 4 of CIO. The first night, I went in there and smoothed her after 10 mins - mistake! It riled her up even more and made her cry harder. It took 48 mins for her to stop crying the first night. I stopped trying to sooth her after that first night. Last night it took 5 mins!

She's 10 months. We originally wanted to wait until she was closer to a year before trying, but just couldn't take it anymore. I should have tried sooner!

@Bao: First night went a-okay! I dream-fed him at 10:30, then let him CIO the rest of the night. He woke up at 1:15 and started fussing and I heard him fussing here and there until 4:00. I'm sure he fell asleep and woke up several times in between. It didn't escalate to scream cries, so that helped. :) I'm feeling positive about it, but then again, that was just the first night! =P I'll have to report back in a few days!

@irene: Thanks for the encouragement and for the advice on solids. He gets a good amount of fat and protein in his diet, and I was in fact hoping that he would automatically drop his night feeds on his own. Guess I'm not patient enough. Just today after letting him CIO, I think he ate more during the day time, which was I think part of our problem - that he was distracted nursing during the daytime and made up for it at night. Chicken porridge sounds like an awesome idea! Can't wait to try it! Now I just need to buy a whole chicken to make it happen!

@CibMomma: Goooood luck, momma! :) So far, the first night went well for us! Let us know how it goes!
