@hummusgirl: if it were me I would invest in something nice since I'd be moving back in a couple years. I'd give ya'll a stern talking to about taking care of the new one. LOL!

You could.go to a scratch and dent-the warehouse stores, like I know Sears has. They sell appliances that are a little dinged up, and much cheaper than retail!

@MsLipGloss: I would love a new pair of LGs! Sadly (or maybe fortunately in this case) ours are an old pair of Mieles so we can possibly argue that he'd have to replace in the next couple years anyway.

@katsupgirl: That's what I was hoping to hear. :-) I'm honest (to a fault!) and my landlord is really great, so I want to be truthful but I'm hoping he'll offer to replace it because this is his apartment that he'll probably move back to in a couple years. Maybe he'll spring for the good stuff.

@regberadaisy: @Dandelion: This is our landlord's prized apartment that he's just renting while he lives across the country for a few years, so he may be willing to invest in it. I do love the idea of used, but we're so not handy that I wonder if we'd pay a bunch to have it moved/installed anyway. Will definitely talk it over with my husband though.

Thanks all!

@regberadaisy: I agree with this. You can probably just get a used one just fine, since it's for a rental.

As a landlord it would be nice if you offered to split it but since it was old anyway the landlord should be okay replacing it. If you split the cost you should get a choice about the new one. If the landlord pays it won't be anything fancy.

Truthfully, if your landlord doesn't know it was your fault they should just replace it.

I def will not pay to have it fix! What about looking on craigslist for a used one to replace it? I highly doubt he will buy a new one for a rental anyway.

You can offer to split it, but if it were me, I would expect you to replace it . . . meaning, I would buy a new machine and have you reimburse me for the cost.

ETA: We have a rental property, but we have a really nice set of front-loading LGs in it . . . so that definitely tainted my response!

So. The other day while doing a load of laundry, our dryer started smoking. We turned it off and scheduled a repairman for today. This morning, I realized there was a lint filter we NEVER cleaned. We cleaned a small strip that was visible in the front, but never the much larger one in the door (which we didn't realize existed until today...in hindsight we should have).

It's an old dryer that's no longer made, so parts and repair are expensive - about $1,000 for a dryer that was discontinued in 2004. I'm thinking we should just get a new one instead of fixing this one. Would it be fair to offer to split the cost with our landlord? Or should we pay the whole cost since the old dryer probably would've gone a couple more years if it hadn't been for our negligence? Either way, expensive lesson learned!
