When I got engaged to DH, I had sort of had to have a discussion with my boss- so in some ways I gave a year's notice.
Because my husband was in the UK and I was in the US, it was obvious that one of us would be moving and it would have been weird and pretty much impossible not to tell. In reality, I didn't turn in my actual notice (in written letter form) until closer to 2 months out (I don't really remember anymore!)
So maybe you could tell your immediate boss without actually giving notice and making it official.

Thanks everyone. I think I am going to go with 2 months, but I am definitely going to talk to my manager first and test the waters as the magnificent @mrbee: suggested! :) And as soon as I put in my notice I shall reveal my true identity!

I would say 6 weeks would be a perfect amount. You don't want to upset them, and this will give them enough time to find someone and have you train them. I think the worst thing that coudl happen is if they find out on FB!

@bee_anonymous: Maybe you could tell your immediate boss at two months, and ask her if she thinks you'll be let go before the full two months expire? If so, ask her to hold off on saying anything for two more weeks?

If you specifically tell her that you told her early b/c you trust the company, that should hopefully establish a positive tone for the convo!

I dunno, I am in the "give as little notice as possible" camp. I gave my employer about 3 months notice with a firm leaving date when I was moving abroad, and they basically used it as a free pass to move me to some emergency call center crap job during the height of the auction rate liquidity crisis.

It is my experience that employers wait until the last possible moment to find replacements, so do it on your time, not theirs.

@mrbee: I wouldn't use the word devastating, but it would definitely be hard on us financially. We still don't know if DH is getting relocation assistance (he applied for this position within his company so it's seen as an elective move) so going without multiple paychecks would definitely make the move really hard. We don't have a lot of savings, so that is scary. Again, I REALLY doubt they would do that, but it's better to be safe than sorry, I know.

Personally, I would feel like 5-6 months is a long time for 'anything to happen' so I would wait until we had made some firm plans and gotten everything in writing before giving notice. You don't want announce that you're leaving, find a replacement then realize that the job offered to your DH is no longer available. I would wait just to be safe.

I think 2 months is the perfect amount of time. AT two months out, you can be pretty sure that nothing will go wrong on your end and it's time to start bringing people in to interview as your replacement. You technically only have to give 2 weeks, so 2 months is very generous.

We're in a similar situation -- going to be moving for my job in another 6 months. DH is probably only going to give 1 month notice. His industry isn't doing well, and his job is in kind of a precarious situation to begin with, so we definitely don't want to give too much notice. In your case though if you're on great terms with your boss and you're comfortable being open with him/her, then 2 months is probably fine.

@bee_anonymous: If you have a good relationship with your boss and are looking for them as a reference, it feels like a totally fair compromise!

One extra factor is how devastating it would be if they asked you to leave early (say after a month, instead of giving you the full two). Would that devastate you financially? If so, maybe it's too much of a risk to give two months notice...

@Rubies: I totally agree with you. Unfortunately I use Facebook for work so there's no way I could deactivate my profile, and I think they would notice if I had them on limited profile. They are FB friends with my husband though, and I am going to have him put them on a limited profile.

Thank you everyone for your awesome advice! The consensus seems to be 2-3 months.

A couple people in my personal life have voted strongly for 1 month along with @chopsuey119:, @HabesBabe: and @GreenThumb: however. They made the good point that you can never be 100% secure in your job. There is a (small) chance they could hire someone to replace me and ask me to leave early, so as to not have to pay two people. To be honest, the fact that they could hire someone for much cheaper than me is probably alluring.

Still, I am leaning towards 2 months. My biggest reason for this that I didn't mention in my original post is that I would really like to use my bosses as references while looking for a new job in our new city. Also, on the off chance that I find a new job and they want me to start sooner than we had originally planned, then I won't be totally catching them off guard. It would be sort of be a 2-months heads up, and then I would be able to tell them a hard date when I am leaving as soon as I find a new job. Is that a decent idea?

I think that your boss needs to hear it from you before anyone else finds out about it and she hears it through other people. If you're worried about things being said via FB, then I would limit profile people or even temporarily deactivate. But because your relationship with your boss is very good, a 2-3 months of notice is respectful and generous.

I agree with 2-3 months. 1 month doesn't give a lot of time for them to not only find a replacement but to get that person up and running in time for you to be able to do some training and make the hand over a smooth process. I think if you have a good relationship with your boss and you have always been a diligent worker (and continue to be up until the day you leave) you have no reason to fear for your job.

i think it really depends on your relationship with your boss. my boss is the main partner of a small public accounting firm. he's known my plan for months and we have a good relationship. i told him early on that i wasn't planning to come back to work after having the babies and he's fine with that. he also said i'm always welcome to join the firm again later on. i gave him months notice so he'll start looking for a replacement when the time comes. everyone knows my status and they're happy for me.

i think if you guys are pretty close at work, it won't affect your relationship. i don't think it'll be weird too. i think it'll be accepted and they'll miss you. but they should understand that it's something you and your hubby have to do.

I'm a business owner, so I'm definitely biased. I'd go with your gut and give two months notice. That's enough time that they will have plenty of time to look for a replacement, and you could even help train the person!

I think your boss and coworkers will be more understanding since it's your husband who triggered the change (i.e. you're not quitting b/c you're unhappy). When someone quits, it always feels more awkward (IMO).

This may very well be the first anonymous/incognito post on Hellobee. I hate to be "that girl" but I really need some input on an issue that needs to remain private for the time being. I am a regular poster, and my username gives away my real life identity.

So, my issue. DH & I just found out that his job will be transferring him to my hometown!!! This is SO exciting for us. We have lived in our current city for 2 years, and we'll miss it, but we want to be closer to my parents before we start a family. This is the first step in our "life plan" and we are really happy about it. We won't be moving for 5 or 6 months, though.

The thing is, I really love my job here. It's not perfect, but I adore all the people I work with. My manager in particular has become a very good friend, probably my closest friend in our city. Not to toot my own horn, but I think I am an asset to my company, and I know that everyone will be sad to hear I am leaving. My job is fairly specialized and they will need to hire someone to replace me.

So my question is: How much notice should I give? I will definitely give more than two weeks. Like I said, my manager is a good friend and keeping the fact that we are moving from her for that long would be hard, and I imagine it would be a little hurtful to her on a personal level. From a professional standpoint, I'd like to allow enough time for them to bring on someone else and for me to help train them, if that's what they want.

Still, I am hesitant to tell anyone now. 5-6 months is a long time to work with a close knit group of people who all know you are leaving - I don't want to be seen as a "lame duck." I also don't want my two bosses that are over my manager to know until closer because it might effect my working relationships with them. No matter how well I am liked, there's always a chance they could give me the boot early.

Right now, I'm thinking maybe 2 months notice? It still feels like it will be SO hard over the next 3 or 4 months to keep it a secret! Not to mention, I'm scared of someone finding out over Facebook or something, since DH's friends and our family will probably know before anyone at my job does.

What do you all think??
