@birdofafeather: super similar situation with me! i also have a naturally loud voice so even if everyone else was talking, the teacher only heard me. lethal combo! and honestly i've spent my whoooole life trying to contain my natural extroverted tendencies and tone down who i am and i just couldn't. i think i'm still kinda the office clown haha. I think the most important thing is supporting kids with these natural tendencies, nurturing who they naturally are but instilling in them the importance of a time/place for everything. i was incredibly well behaved at church and restaurants and with other adults. i never really misbehaved, just cracked a lot of jokes and required a lot of attention. i don't necessarily think it was a bad thing and all my teachers loved me!

I was pretty studious but got in trouble when I was younger because I finished my work before everyone else and then distracted them by talking. I was "advanced" and very extroverted. I got involved in a lot of extracurriculars to fill that social gap!

ETA: but like @loki: I kinda always had the issue, even into HS! It was actually a joke to a couple of us in middle school that we got 29s, which was the code for talking too much in class. :P

i was an intense class clown my whooooole life and nothing really worked. i was in all kinds of sports, musical theatre, cheerleading, dance... but nothing seemed to contain me. i'm still a bit guilty of it... when i get an audience, i can't help myself! ha! i don't think i was ever inappropriate or distracting to the point of it being an issue that was brought home to my parents. but i've definitely had some talking tos in my life haha. so not really helpful advice.
i will note that i was classified as gifted and moved to a gifted program from grades 4-8. i think that helped because i was with a lot of like minded children and i was a lot more challenged than in my other elementary school and later, in high school. i think my acting out was a lot worse when i reached high school and wasn't being as challenged.

@mrbee: I wasn't. But I'd say if he's outgoing and he likes the attention - get that kid into the arts! An instrument, theatre, dancing. Something where he can be creative and make people smile. Sounds like the perfect outlet :)
I was very artistic but not very confident.

I wasn't but I think my son is! We've been working with him to talk through appropriate class behavior and it's made a huge difference.

I realized though, that I don't know much about how to make a class clown happy (outside of letting him say whatever he wants in class, whenever he wants). What kind of alternate outlets can we give him to get that energy out?

Were you a class clown? I'd love to hear one thing that worked for you as a kid!
