In K through 4th grade my brother (2 years younger) and I would attend the after school program until around 5 or 6pm when my mom left work. Starting when I was in 5th grade I was allowed to go home and be home alone. Walked to school by ourselves too, about half a mile. This was NYC too! My mom tried to come home early from their business, but we would be at home for at least a few hours between school ending and my mom coming home most days.</p> <p>We lived in a townhome complex with a lot of our friends who were also latch key kids.</p> <p>My how times have changed. </p>
