Yes and no. For me I think it was a control thing when I was little - I was just testing my limits and being defiant. As an adult I clearly have grown up haha and try a lot more!

I wasn't a picky eater as a kid and I'm not picky now. There are a couple things I never liked ( mayo and cauliflower) and I don't think I ever will.

I was extremely picky as a child and I remember my parents trying to make me stay at the able until I finished, but I never would!

I eat everything now, not picky at all. There are several meals I refuse though. Anything with gravy, some cuts and types of meat: I'll eat any vegetable though!

I don't think there is anything edible that I don't like, and have been like that since I was little. We always ate lots of different foods and flavours growing up.

I wonder if there is any kind of medical procedure or help of some sort to help those who have major aversions to different kinds of tastes/textures etc -- I can just imagine that having those aversions would make social situations etc kind of stressful at times, and that is not fun :(

I was a super picky eater as a child and have gotten better as an adult, but am still picky about certain things. With our child we will purposely introduce lots of different foods so that perhaps he/she won't be so picky...but in the end, there's not much you can do about it.

I am extremely picky as a child and even now. I eat like a 5 year old at the oldest. I am very careful about textures and even call anything that changes the texture "goobers". I am very picky about the brands of food and actually taste the difference. Eating can be a very anxious time for me as I worry about what might be in or on the food.

When I was 9 I went to girl scout camp and you have to try everything in order to have desert. I wanted desert so badly so I tried a bell pepper. I puked after trying it and didn't end up getting desert anyway.

Luckily my son is not picky at all and we have worked hard to make good food associations for him.

I was a lot more sensitive to bitter tastes when I was younger. I threw up a little when we did the taste test in school for bitter (when you taste sweet, sour, etc). I guess I grew out of it because I'm not very picky now. I do have an eating style but if I'm a guest in someones house served family style I'll eat and try everything.

I did an eating study when LO was first born and they really stressed not filling kids plates and then forcing them to eat everything, that it builds bad habits and associations with foods.

@Mrs. Jacks: I am one! I've done the blue dye test. I think it all goes together to make eating really difficult for me.

A little hope for all of you worried about raising a picky child - my daughter is ABSOLUTELY not like me. My husband and I have worked really hard to expose her to a wide variety of food, and she likes just about all of it. She doesn't have any of the pickiness that I had since birth. Now, I fully expect her to do the usual toddler/child food stuff, and I don't think she'll always be so good about it, at every moment. But she absolutely seems to lack my taste issues.

@sarac: There are also people who are super-tasters. Don't know if you are one, but apparently you can test the density of your taste buds with a dye and see if you are one.

Mr Jacks and I joke that I'm a supertaster, but I haven't actually done the test.

I was very picky as a child, I am better now as an adult but I still am more picky than most adults. I am pretty well convinced that I have mild sensory issues between my food issues and a few other quirks that I have. I have definitely expanded the number of foods I will eat but the new things still seem to fit the categories that were acceptable to me as a kid for example-- I loved smooth, creamy things as a kid and now I will eat avocados; I wouldn't eat real mashed potatoes because they were lumpy, now I eat them but I usually use the tines of my fork to break up any big lumps.

@sarac: That is so interesting to me! I am always reassured to hear that sometimes there are actual reasons for picky eating.

No and no. I do enjoy foods now that I didn't as a kid, like onions, but I don't think the foods I didn't like as a child were uncommon for children to dislike.

Two foods I still dislike are pineapple & cucumbers (which I am actually allergic to, so it doesn't matter that I don't care for cucumbers!).

I was a super picky eater as a child, but I eat pretty normally now. I still have foods I really dislike and won't eat (squash and similar veggies because I hate the texture, pretty much all sea food), but it's no big deal. My mom was the same way growing up.

To those of you who say they didn't have the chance to be picky, what do you mean? Is it that your folks would make you clean your plate? Or that you wouldn't get a special meal because you didn't like what was served? Both?

I ask because those sorts of things didn't work on me. I was the kid who, if told to eat everything, would sit at the dinner table and stare at the plate for 4+ hours and just be hungry. Saving it in the fridge for later didn't work because I wouldn't eat it then, either. My mom never worried because she had been the same way as a kid and grew up to not be picky, but it drove my stepdad nuts. A few times he actually force fed me foods I didn't like. Those are all foods that I have such a strong aversion to today that they make me physically ill when I try them. It's sad, because many are things I hear are good (sweet potatoes, for example), but when I've given them honest chances I struggle to even keep them down. The tactics for getting me to eat things I disliked also affected my long term relationship with food. I think it's important for kids to try things, but if they are able to get proper nutrition otherwise I don't think it's okay to force them to eat something they think is gross.

@sarac: Oddly enough, things that have an expected bitterness are ok for him--he likes beer and wine, though he does more genuinely enjoy the sweet drinks. But something like Brie, which everyone says is creamy and melty awesomeness he says has this bitter taste he can only describe as "death", lol. He gets it for other random foods and it makes me think he's tasting a chemical or something that others are not.

@vnvdvci: Yeah, I was really heartened to read that study. Most of the people I know just assume I could get over it if I 'really tried', which drives me crazy. I've been trying to appreciate beer and wine for a decade, and they continue to taste as awful and bitter as always. This is not something I have the power to change.

@sarac: I agree, I definitely think there's some physical justification for picky eating. DH was an ultra-picky child and he's much better now, but still can't eat some things. He talks about how certain foods taste incredibly "bitter", when they don't taste bitter at all to anyone else. Come to think of it, he's had horrible ear infections in the past...
