@artbee: These techniques changed my life:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autogenic_training

Also, this book has an amazing chapter on how to use a heavy object to help you combat anxiety:
http://www.amazon.com/New-Talkpower-Business-Personal-Development/dp/189212324X/

The trick is designed to help with public speaking, but I find that it helps with all sorts of anxiety!

Also, a CBT therapist can work wonders very quickly... they help you change how you think about things so that you spend less time worrying. Amazing stuff:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_behavioral_therapy

Good luck!!!

I have a pretty serious anxiety disorder, mostly social anxiety, that showed up in full force in the tenth grade. Before that, I was a shy kid for sure - I sat in the back of the class where I wouldn't be the centre of attention, and I nearly cried anytime I was called on. I had a few friends, mostly because I just followed along with the crowd. I buried myself in books because I was way too anxious about other people to actually talk to them.
Its still something I struggle with in a major way now, which is why sites like HelloBee are awesome - they keep me from becoming a total recluse.

@artbee: If you're interested, I could send you some links and recommendations... anxiety is very easy to treat. I finally beat it (mostly) and it's been life changing!

I was a carefree child but turned into an anxious adult - when I was in law school and it hasn't stopped 10 years later.

I was anxious as a child. I remember always thinking the worst. Like if my parents were late picking me up from school I immediately assumed something terrible happened to them. I can remember thinking this way from as early as 8 or 9.

I was extremely anxious and worried a ton as a child. When I was 6, my doctor told my mom I was at “pre-ulcer” stage from stressing myself out. :/

Thankfully, as I get older, I get less and less worried about things. Most things I can’t control, so I prepare within reason, and wait to worry until there is a need. I’m much more carefree at 30 than I was at 10.

@lilteacherbee I worried about dying a lot too. Except I worried I would do something and accidentally kill myself. Jeez. Sometimes I'm surprised that I turned out mostly normal.

I was and still am, probably why I've had migraines my whole life! I always hated getting yelled at so I'd do everything I could to prevent it. Once in 3rd grade I got my name on the board and freaked out, I ended up crying and gave myself a migraine and had to go home. I was also very shy so all social situations and any time I'd have to talk to someone made me nervous. I went through a whole gymnastics class when the teacher called me the complete wrong name and I answered to it because correcting her would mean I had to talk to her. We have it on video, she would say "Jennifer, sit down " not my name, but I sat.

Yes. I was a major worrier, especially when it came to medical stuff. I had 3 surgeries when I was in 1st-2nd grade so I was always so paranoid that I was "dying" and I was very scared of going to the doctor.

Also, I was a very quiet kid, but occasionally I would get in trouble at school (VERY rarely). Whenever the teacher would say something to me, like "pay attention" or whatever, I would start crying. I had major anxiety about being called on in class. That persisted until college. And presentations for projects? I'd have a panic attack.

I think I used to get nervous about normal nerve wracking things--giving presentations, etc. I used to have sweaty palms when I was younger. Thank God I grew out of it!

Same. I actually developed an anxiety disorder after my parents' divorce when I was 9...I still struggle with it more than 12 years later. Prior to that I was also fairly anxious and a worry wart. It hasn't gone anywhere.

I tend to stress and over worry about things that I shouldn't. When I was a kid I was the same way. I rode the bus to school and when I heard it coming each day I would run down the driveway because I was worried about missing it, even though the bus driver had wait for me to get there. On the first day of school I was always concerned that I would go to the wrong classroom. I worried about what seat to sit in when I got to class (I did this is college too). I didn't like to ask for snacks, and I wasn't brave enough to go into the kitchen and get something myself because I was scared of getting into trouble. Going back to my dad's on Sunday after a weekend with my mom brought on a whole new level of anxiety.

I definitely think I spent too much of my childhood worrying. I should've been more carefree. What about you?
