There was no bathroom, just the woods - I never remember going, so I don't know how I held it all day! I had a radio and I remember writing in a notebook but other than that there was nothing and I was terribly bored. I remember not having a watch and had no idea what time it was and didn't know if I had hours left or a few minutes. So bizarre. I had two older siblings, plus a lot of neighbors were my good friends and we'd all play together. I was especially bffs with the girl across the street. </p> <p>Also, I was pretty good at entertaining myself. I always liked to craft a lot and would make up little projects for myself. A friend of mine divides kids into 2 categories: those that get bored and those that don't. Those that don't find things to do even when there's no activity (and hence get "in trouble" a lot more). There were no neighborhood kids to play with. I was bored a lot. School vacations got soooooo dull. I remember one summer, we didn't go anywhere, my mom worked nights so I had to be quiet during the day while she slept and it rained.all.summer.long. We didn't have cable and I had very few indoor toys. I was five so I could barely read at that age. I only had my a few of my great grandma's dresses to wear for dress up and I had tea parties by myself all the time, haha.</p> <p>Some boredom is okay, finding out ways to have fun and be creative is important but at some point as a parent, you've got to think its a little unfair to your child if they are bored out of their mind, all the time. Boredom was a constant foe... even with books to read and computers to program (I was a dork).</p> <p>I feel like kids aren't nearly as bored these days... their parents are more around to play, and then there are things like iPads and computers to entertain them. Plus a million more TV shows, as opposed to reruns of cartoons one morning a week.</p> <p>Is being bored an essential part of being a kid? Is the slow death of childhood boredom a bad thing? Or ha, maybe kids are still bored even with all this stimulation!</p> <p>Were you bored a lot growing up? Do you think our kids will be more or less bored than we were? </p>
